I set up a friend yesterday using the following method, see if it works for you.

Josh,
There *is* a fix for allowing Outlook Express to receive the email after having MSN Explorer switch the account to a web based email account. But, you really have to *drag* it out of M$N customer service and tech support.
For those of you bit by this nasty snake, here is how to get your M$N/Hotmail in Outlook Express (note: this WILL NOT work in Outlook 2000 and your Outlook Express rules WILL NOT work):
1) In Outlook Express goto Tools / Accounts / Add / Mail...
2) Put in your name <next>
3) Put in your @msn.com address <next>
4) Choose "http" as the mail server type
5) Put the following into the mail server editbox:
http://oe.msn.msnmail.hotmail.com/cgi-bin/hmdata
<next>
(Note: Do not click this in this post. This should not be a link here)
6) Put in you @msn.com account name and password <next>
7) Click finish.
I won't promise that you will like using this in Outlook Express as you did your pop3 mail but this is the *only* way to get it to work.
Regards,
Steve
hopefully the anandtech effect will not induce them to stop this method of e-mail retrieval
