A bunch of magazine subscriptions. She's basically in heaven's waiting room now, might as well pick up a bad magazine.

get a 7'' digital photo frame loaded with pictures of everyone in the workplace in addition to pictures of outings, and little recordings by people in mp3 format for her (eg. "Hi, this is Jake, thanks for being a great coworker") that will play off the photoframe.

We are kind of doing that already except with a big hand painted pic that was made for her. We are all going to sign it.

I was thinking a little more classy/sentimental.

OMG, that's just cheap.

Give her money or a VISA Gift card. If she worked for 10 years for little or no pay, anything that tacky is just insulting.

we are looking for something else besides that as well...Its a painting we have in the office, its been there for a few years. One of the clients at the place painted one of the director and the 2 front office ladies (each separate) So we are going to Make a copy of it and all sign it. She hates the picture so we thought it would be funny to give her that.

That isnt her retirement gift..we want to get her something else as well.

Yep, Tacky, tacky, tacky. </gomer pyle>
No wonder she's leaving, you people are not only cheap, but mean as well.
For all of her selfless, underpaid work, this is the send off you think is appropriate for a woman her age?
If it was some college age clown , then you might be right. But for someone of advanced age, ESPECIALLY one who is as underpaid as staff in "professional Offices" tend to be,it's just wrong.
Better a card and a cake and done than giving someone a "gag"gift" that you spent money on to do. Unless there's a VISA Gift Card taped to the back, that's such a bad idea I'm amazed someone with HR cred's hasn't piped up. Gag gifts are never a GOOD idea, especially when under company auspices.
Class, real Class. If she has any, she'll smile sweetly as she thinks to herself..."Yes, just as I thought, cheap, unappreciative jerks to the very end. Good riddance." and drops it in the trash when she gets home.

ok you can shut up now, you have obviously a skewed sense of the situation..read the WHOLE post that IS NOT her gift...that is just something on the side..like a card..and for your information one that her best friend suggested so ill thank you to stay out of this thread again...especially when you think that a classy gift is a visa giftcard? giftcards are the scumm of presents..0 thought involved 0 appreciation behind it 0 heart within a giftcard

Not going away. And I sure as hell don't shut up just because you say so.
I read the whole post.
Did you read what I wrote, because I fail to see where I said or insinuated that a VISA Gift Card was "classy".
A VISA Gift Card is infinitley more desirable than some hand painted portrait that is universally ridiculed. Only someone bent on delivering their own cruel joke would think otherwise.
If anyone has a skewed sense of a situation, it's more than likely someone who is emotionally attached to a situation (you) and refuses to acknowledge what an emotionally disconnected third party may perceive (me).
I am aware it's a Gag gift.
I am of the opinion that Gag Gifts have no place in the workplace.
While you may feel that a gift card is tacky, you seem to think your Gag gift is ok, so we fundamentally disagree on what consitutes "appropriate".
I was simply offering an alternative to what is obviously the plan to give her something she has no regard for.
In the workplace, it's better to err on the side of discretion, at least that's what the professionals say.
Of course, if If it's a small company, you can treat people like crap and get away with it.

It would be as if you were retiring, after a decade of underpaid work, and they gave you a VISA Gift card, knowing how much you believe they represent the height in callousness, just because it's "funny", when in fact it's not funny/ haha, but funny / ironic.

The Gag Gift Idea is shallow and childish. That it comes from her "best friend" means nothing. Women often treat each other in strange , cruel ways for reasons that escape reason.
You don't really know the dynamic at play between those women and she may be "playing" someone, either you or the retiree.

Admit it, you wouldn't want that picture anymore than anyone else and would take a GIFT CARD in a heartbeat, and would be MAJORLY PISSED if they gave you that damn hand painted piece of crap.
