I did receive the monitor and I have mixed feelings. I think the HP was a bit better 'cept for the one corner that had horrible backlight issue (of course that monitor was $400). I've not noticed horrible backlight issue with this monitor but it is not uniform in a very dark room. I've not noticed a non-uniform tint issue but the colour balance is off and I'm not very good at adjusting it (hence request for some suggested settings).

The colours (esp black) seem some how more shallow (like thin paper) than the HP. Does that description make sense? I've not noticed any real banding or non-uniformity in the colours.

It is better than my old 2001fp but is not a perfect monitor. I think if the HP had not had the backlight issue in the one corner I would have prefer it even for the extra $$$.

Also my monitor is marked 2009WAf (not sure what the f means) and was manufactured dec 2008.

Anyways if someone have some suggested settings to try drop a note. Right now I've reduced brightness and contrast to around 30/40 all else default. Colour is a bit too blue and i think I need to up contrast a little.

There were a couple posts in the hardforum thread from users who hardware calibrated their monitor. There was also another guy who was adamant that his settings were the only acceptable ones, I think it was 70-71 contrast and single digit brightness. It seems like settings aren't quite one size fits all for that monitor, like most in its price range, but almost everyone had 70s contrast and low brightness.

I've done a search on the thread and via various other online resources and found nothing useful. If I've overlooked an answer, I apologize in advance.

Here's my situation for which I need a recommendation for an LCD monitor -

I support a group of users who live and die by an application designed (I've talked to the designers and coders) to be viewed at 1024x768 or higher. The app includes zero controls for the users to alter the look/fonts. The app also employs various delicate fonts that I'm sure look great to the youngsters that designed it but are pretty darn hard to read.

Our standard 17 and 19 inch monitors have various native resolutions, all of them higher than 1024x768. When they are turned down to that resolution, they all look horrible and many of my users can't read the application screens.

I need to find a monitor designed to crisply display static text at the larger sizes required by aging eyes. It needs to have a native resolution no higher than 1024x768 (or maybe one step higher, if the screen is above minimum size) and must be at least 17 inches diagonal. Widescreens should be at least 19 inches to be considered.

My strong preference is for a 19" screen with 1024x768 native resolution and (obviously) a standard (non-widescreen) aspect ratio.

Yes, we've been through ClearType, dot pitch changes, and other things that create administration problems in a large user population. What we really need is simply a hardware solution that makes on-screen objects bigger.

Does anyone manufacture such a beast?

Take a look at the glossy monitors list in the OP. I try to keep this updated.

The 2208WFP is a matte panel.

The selection of glossy 22"s is indeed limited although the LG L227WTG-PF and HP w2207h are two clear winners.

mmnno, So I messed up again? The person in India told me it was a IPS panel as that is what I wanted for my wife and myself. So you say the best one to get is the 2209WA? I was just looking on the DELL sight and the S2309W has a 160/170 viewing angle so that is a what panel? PVA? If I have to I will cancel this order in the morning and order what you and xtknight say to get. I like the honest answers and this forum, not somebody trying to talk to my chickens!

Ok, I see the PX2211MW In the Business section, is this one any good? I will order when you say I have the correct choice xtknight

lol, I take it your wife does use that G520? Then yes, you need the 2209WA and nothing else, unless you want to stretch your budget for a second PX2611W.

160/170 is TN always. PVA monitors these days say 178/178 even if they are more truthfully 176/176. Warning: some TNs will claim 178/178, like certain NECs.

The PX2211MW is a run of the mill TN. When I said 'the Planar' I meant the one and only PX2611W. That is the only planar you should buy.

Didn't want to burden this thread with a multi-paragraph query, but anyone (XTKnight et al) with experience of qualite 22 to 24-inch displays is invited to offer advice on selecting an IPS or PVA-panel monitor. Still and moving-picture quality are paramount. 🙂

Winterpool, I read your other post via the link and you thought about the 23" that I was talked into by DELL via India but was told to go with the 2209WA instead. What makes this hard for me is I am trying to do this w/o my wife knowing what I am getting her for B-Day. So I can't do a lot of research as she will see what I am doing. As far as others saying (I've been told) ext. I have a poor memory and other disability's do to being electrocuted at work. I am on high doses of fentynal (sp) Percocet ext so please forgive me if I ask a question twice or forget what I was told.

JASTECH, from what I've read of your posts, I've to agree with the others that the Dell 2209WA seems the clear choice for your wife, if image quality is a serious concern. I don't think you'll find a better display in your price range, especially since punters have been getting the 2209WA for $215-225 before tax. Note that the 25 per cent coupon code I mentioned earlier may no longer be working. I got an 'expired' / 'maximum redemptions' error when testing it just now.

Is the LG Flatron L227WTG-PF still the fastest, best gaming monitor? I would prefer 24" but want the most CRT response possible. It makes a difference for me. Hardcore COD2 FPS dork here. Speed kills or gets you killed lol.

One with a green power light and 1 dvi 1 analog connection and 500 cd/m2 typical brightness.

Another with a blue power light and 2 dvi ports, 1 analog, and 400 cd/m2 typical brightness.

Ok thanks. I'll try the rgb setting I have contrast/brightness under control - just that the screen is a bit too blue and I'm having trouble setting the rgb to reasonable values that make it more neutral.

Strange, no retailers list the second version, but planar lists those stats on the product page. The second version matches up with the NEC 2690, while the first (original?) version is more like the DS-263N without the DVI-I port.

Hey guys, I'm doing a lot of research trying to pick out a 24 incher suitable for 3d graphics and some photo editing work. I'm an amateur and a student and as of yet I don't know if I'll be needing the extended colour space at all or if good sRGB display will be more important to me.. I'm still in the middle of researching and figuring that out but I'm looking at 2 potential monitors right now, the LP2475W from HP and the Nec 2490wuxi. I figured, depending on whether I decide I need the extended colour space or not I'll know which one to get.

However, I was initially going by PRAD's review which calibrated the LP2475w very well but with a some deviation in sRGB, of course AdobeRGB was excellent. Here is that section of the review

Then while reading about some other monitors I came across the Dell 2408WFP review at tftcentral which seemed to have a fantastic calibration which then led me to look for the lp2475w review and of course it had fantastic calibration to sRGB as well, much better than what PRAD achieved. Here is the tftcentral review

So my question now is, why were the results from both sites so different? Is it dependent on the calibration software/hardware they are using? Did they get different screens from manufacturer? Something else?

I want to know this because if I can get good calibration hardware and software to get the kind of results TFT got (probably for the price difference between the NEC and the HP alone) I can just go order the LP2475w and call it a day. I can worry about what space is more beneficial to me once I start work I guess as I'll have both options with this monitor right?

So, what are your thoughts?

TFTcentral did not even try to calibrate to sRGB on the LP2475W because the sRGB mode does nothing but throw the colors off. They probably would have got the same result as PRAD.

You're misinterpreting the image. The radio button marked 'sRGB' simply displays the sRGB color gamut (orange triangle) in comparison to the monitor's (black triangle.) If they selected 'Adobe RGB' a bigger orange triangle would show up, and 'ISOcoated' would show a quadrilateral-type shape.

As for their calibration targets, the values they chose are the sRGB standards, but they did not attempt to calibrate the monitor in the sRGB gamut, using the sRGB mode. That is what prad tried to do, and they failed because this monitor does not have such a feature. As tftcentral put it:

The LP2475W offers a supposed sRGB simulation mode via the OSD menu as well, so we wanted to test how this performed, again with everything else left at default. The screen immediately looked darker and slightly more 'murky' to the eye, and the colorimeter revealed luminance was reduced down to 232 cd/m2 now. Colour temperarture moved further away from the desired 6500k (being 16% out now) and colour accuracy didn't really change. The main thing this mode is supposed to do is simulate the sRGB colour space, which is important for those not wanting to work with extended colour spaces. Strangely, this mode did nothing for the screens gamut, and the CIE diagram on the left shows the colour space remains considerably larger than the sRGB reference triangle! I am left to assume that all this mode really does is darken the image! Very odd...

So the monitor by itself cannot display sRGB content accurately. That requires an icc profile and color managed applications, or else a color managed operating system. Vista may be able to do this, but I'm having trouble with that feature since I'm running dual monitors.

just a Heads-Up on that Dell 2209W that was recently added to the gaming list; BB has that monitor as a normal price of $239, compared to Dell's $299. Looks real hard to resist. gonna have to visit BB and see just how good it looks. thanks again xtknight.
