So I went to buy a retail p4 HSF from a local store, and the guy tells me my motherboard couldn't use the P4 retal HSFs he has, because the retention system on it isn't "normal". (the black plate around the socket)

i thought he was full of it...but is he right? and what do I need to install an HSF on that motherboard? I'm confused now, I thought all the mobos/HSF had the same system..

I guess my question is would any HSF fit on that mobo, without any additions? (it's retail, so I won't miss anything 😛 )

I bought my board refurbished, and it didn't have the heatsink bracket. I had to borrow one from another board. They are available at fan speciality venders such as coolermaster, nextfan, etc. listed in pricewatch. They sell for $4-6 plus shipping.
