Retain iPhone contacts after disabling contact sync

I sync contacts between Gmail and my iPhone to keep a single list of all emails, phone numbers, etc.

I will be setting up an Exchange email sync, and because you can only have one sync, I will have to delete the Gmail one.

When I did this a minute ago, ALL contacts were deleted from my phone. I set it up again and resynced them, but I need a way to retain them after getting rid of the first sync.

Anyone know how this is possible?

If you're just using exchange for email you should be able to use gmail for contacts & calendar.

But other than that you'd have to sync your gmail to exchange then iphone to exchange.

When syncing Gmail it technically creates an Exchange sync on iPhone. Because you can only have one Exchange account, it will have to go.

I dont care whether or not the syncing continues, I just want the contacts that I have now to be copied permanently to my phone.

Ahh I didn't realize you can have only one exchange profile.

Mac or PC? I think you can sync the Mac's address book with both Exchange and gmail, then you can sync your iPhone to the Mac address book.

Also you should be able to set what settings are synched - just take off "Contacts" on your exchange server settings.

I use PC.

If I take off contacts on my sync settings, all contacts are deleted from my phone.

Weird I've never had that issue. Can you force phone contacts to overwrite exchange contacts? You may not need them in exchange - but maybe it doesn't hurt to just leave them there anyway?

I ended up using the Export feature in Gmail, importing into Outlook, and syncing up with my new Exchange server.

Oddly enough, when exporting to vCard format, it only exported my very first contact. Exporting to .csv did the trick though.

Im still not sure why ALL of them were removed when I killed the sync.
