Retail workers, I'd like your opinion on two job offers I got.

I just got invited to the orientation of a new Best Buy store opening in the Bay Area (Colma). I passed all the interviews, completed the drug test, and got a job offer of $11 an hour as a sales associate, with a 3-4% raise after 3 months. The store is to open soon (a month?)

Unfortunately, I am in a dilemma. I just completed the second interview (with the general manager) at Circuit City, and he is interested in hiring me as well. At $10.50 an hour, with a possible dollar raise in a year. I was all up for Best Buy mainly because I like them more, the store is new, which means the facility will be much nicer.

However, the general manager brought up some good points, (or he brainwashed me). He knows my situation with BestBuy, and decided to talk me out of working there, for one reason or another.

He said that since the Best Buy is new, they will overstaff to make a good first impression to the public. He said Best Buy will lay off many of their workers due to this. He also said that Best Buy will pay me more, but there will be more work involved.

I don't care too much about the pay, because right now I'm getting $7 an hour doing monkey work.

What would you do in my position?

At Best Buy, I would be a digital imaging associate (sell digital cameras and digital video equipment).

Circuit City will be having me sell cameras, video cameras, computers, cell phones.

I know both places will make me push the warranties such as CityAdvantage and the BB Protection Plan though, so there's no getting out of that. It's hard to make a decision because they're direct competitors and are so similar.

id say cc because you would be getting commission on sales

I believe that's correct. Commissioned sales > constantly being hassled by manager to sell more service plans, etc. to prevent being fired.

CC hasn't done commissioned sales in over a year. At least I think it's been over a year since their massive layoff.

Circuitcity is not commissioned sales, they havent been for well over a year now.

That being said, i work technology sales (computers, cell phones, cameras) at circuitcity and I like it.

Yea selling cityadvantage sucks, but if your good at it, mgmt likes you and you dont get hassled :)

Just wondering, when there's downtime (no customers), am I able to just walk around and not do anything?

I'm really used to constantly finding something to do, due to my previous jobs. I'd like some "chill time."

The CC guy is right about overhiring when they first open. Pretty much all stores do this. If you don't make a good impression, you could get laid off.

I've worked at CC for three years now.

No, there is no more commission.

Honestly, 2 or 3 years ago, I'd say go with CC hands down. I'm not a big fan of the direction the store is headed, but it still isn't too bad. I'd say these days its probably pretty similar regardless of which one you go with, but you'll probably have better coworkers at CC, the BB will be hiring a lot of morons who dont know anything about product or sales, so I'd say CC.

CC. And if I remember correctly their employee discount seemed to always turn out better when comparing prices on similar items. Of course I'm basing this off of the time when I worked at Best Buy in 2000 and compared prices to a friend who worked at CC.

The discount was slashed this past December.

We used to get store cost. Then they hired a bunch of seasonal people for the first time this past Christmas, and didn't want to give them a good discount, so they raised the price we get stuff at, and never brought it back.

If I were you I would ask CC to pay me 11$/hr or I am going to BB, and tell BB that you got hired at CC too, and see if they will pay you more. Do you plan on making a career out of this? if not, just work for whoever can pay you the highest. good luck.

Not doing this for a living. I'm going to school too, but would rather have a stable job. I think I'm going to give CC a call to do paperwork.

Well, thanks for the help people.

I called the manager at CC and I'm going to start work Monday morning.

Wish me luck!

yeah i would have chosen CC as well. Sears is also a good choice (used to work there). One of the few places that still does commission sales. But they just had a massive restructuring of the pay system, and its base pay + comission now.
