My future brother in law is putting together a new computer and has all the parts for this weekend but his OEM copy of Home Premium Vista 32 will be coming on Monday.

What my question is, I have the retail upgrade edition of Vista Ultimate 32. Can I install this copy of Vista, not entering the serial number, and then input the serial when his copy of Vista arrives on Monday?

I know that if you don't enter a serial on initial install, Vista will prompt you during installation as to what verison you bought, and you can select Home Premium from the list even though it is the Ultimate disk.

My guess is 50/50 that it will work; I am sure that I will be able to install the Home premium version, but I am not sure if it will accept the serial/key when the disk arrives next Monday. Does anyone have any expereince with this?

In my experience the OEM and Retail/Upgrade keys are not interchangable.

Thats why he's not entering the key until the OEM version arrives.
It should work fine, I used my roomates 64bit Ultimate eddition to install home premium on mine, then entered my key once I got it. Just make sure that you install the version that he has coming.
