Retail Ultimate and swapping hardware FYI

Just a little heads up but last night I swapped out my opteron for a c2d e6400. My machine wouldn't reboot even after trying the repair utility on the dvd so I ended up doing a clean install. Ms wouldn't let me reactivate over the internet or over the automated phone system so I ended up speaking to a live person in India who actually spoke pretty good english. Well anyway to make a long story short they made me phone in even though I've got the retail ultimate software which peaves me just a bit. The whole purpose for getting the retail package was so that I could move my hardware as I pleased with a minimal amount of fuss but ms doesn't see it that way.

I'm not sure why you thought that the retail version would be more or less lenient on hardware changes. The only difference AFAIK is that you can swap motherboards and move the license to the new one.

Changing the MB/CPU will likely always be a big enough change to require reactivation, although I'm a little surprised that you had to phone in. Had you done the initial install recently?

Retail means you can move to a new system (or change hw), however if you do it frequently (120 days was the time frame they used with xp, and I dont believe that has changed) you would need to call in.

Do the retail Upgrade discs also allow you to change computer configurations, or uninstall vista from a computer and move it to another, or is this only applicable for the Full Retail versions?

You can with upgrades as well, however you can't continue to run the old OS AND the new one on two different machines at the same time.
