I am wanting to add memory to my sons pc he uses for college..(only has 256mb)..the deal is.. it is a Compaq pc,, Compaq Presario SR1703WM Desktop (sux.. I know) but it has a Asus mobo.. here is the mobo #.. A8AE-LE..
at the HP/Compaq site ...it tells it takes pc3200 memory and is up-gradeable to 4 gb what is confusing me is it doesnt say whether it is dual channel memory or not..will it harm the memory or the mobo if I put dual channel in it? I would like to put at least 1 gb of matched memory in it if possible. Any help would be appreaciated.

It's a Socket 939 board, you'll need to get two sticks. 2x512MB is probably what you'll need.

Circuit City has a 512MB module for $20 after rebate. 512+256 should be adequate for college. No need to worry about matching RAMs since dual channel will only add about 30MHz at most to the core speed.
