Geez man. Prices vary drastically here just like anywhere else. Housing prices are nuts in Vancouver, pretty normal in Calgary, real cheap in more rural areas.

I'm not surprised... People were expecting Target US in Canada and that isn't what they got. I knew that wasn't going to be the case before it opened.

Sucks for people, 17600, losing their jobs. Oil patch going too, this can't be good for the country.

But Target didn't seem to have much going for it outside of the US brands and prices, which they probably didn't/couldn't take entirely across the border. At least stores like J.Crew had their exclusive lines of clothes or wares.

P.S. Heard rumors about this days ago. Never had a chance to go to a Target. Didn't see the point when I had a Super Wal-Mart and Best Buy within walking distance + online everything.

The average national price is supposedly around $400k. Way higher in Vancouver and Toronto. How people will pay for these with 17,600 fewer jobs... you tell me.

Target Canada sucked, at least for the stores around my place. They were totally disorganized, with half-empty shelves, and shelves with the wrong stuff or all messed up.

It reminded me of another store I dislike, which is Wal-Mart, with just as bad disorganization and the same creepy people, but with worse stock availability and often worse pricing.

I feel for the people who lost their jobs, but as a consumer, my gut feeling is good riddance.

I like the description of their training/culture/management as passive-aggressive. Having owned and operated service oriented businesses in Minnesota this comes as no surprise.

Really sounds like the company flat out overreached trying to do too much too soon without enough appreciation of the differences between the two countries. Not the first time this has happened and won't be the last.

And K-Mart/Sears just announced that they are closing the K-Mart Distribution Center in this town. I remember being surprised when the local K-Mart was included in a round of store closing a early on since distribution costs were obviously cheaper but the DC kept trucking until now.

Oh! But the recession is over, folks! Markets are making money so that means all other kinds of businesses are making money too!

Sears/Kmart and Radio Shack aren't doing poorly because of the economy. They are doing poorly because of poor leadership, poor management, and the fact they they did not change with the market or update theirs stores and product lines.

They should have died years ago. We also need to remember These companies have all had problems even in good times. We also need not forget retail B&M stores are being squeezed by online sales.

As things began to go downhill, the IAs were extremely pointed, and openly opined that the Canadian Team Members worked "differently & less hard" and overall "took less accountability" than they were used to in the U.S.

I was salesfloor/electronics and I worked part time during college. Hated that place...still refuse to shop at Target because of how much I couldn't stand working there.

Only good memory I had was making out with one of the managers after hours :wub:. She was cute.

This sort of comes as a surprise. The Target here in Victoria hasn't even been open for a year. Probably closer to 6 months. They built a brand spanking new one at the Hillside Mall and it quickly became a go to for us since it was right next to our grocery store. I have no clue what will go in there now... it'll just be a dead space along with the soon to be gone Sears.

Not always, we laid some peeps off and they got jobs in a 3-4 weeks, and were still collecting severance.
