I don't plan on overclocking this processor but is the stock cooler that comes with the retail version of the processor good enough or should I consider another brand?

If you aren't going to o/c, then it is fine. I really don't think AMD would have included it if they thought otherwise.

I've mucked up my retail HSF, resulting in CPU temps around 60 degrees C (yeah, I know). It has yet to crash, but ...

What is my best bet for "refinishing" the bottom surface of my heatsink. I want to make sure that it is as flast as possible. Then I could hopefully make the best of some Artic Silver II (which I am using now).

as long as you have good case cooling, the stock fan will work fine. your cpu won't have the coolest temps, but it's not like the cpu will burn out on you either. you shouldn't have a problem.

My office machine has been running for the past 2 months (24/7) with a 1.4 + retail HSF. I *did* remove the tape and use Artic Silver II (just paranoid I guess).

Temps hover around 41 deg C in a well-air conditioned room.

I have the AMD 1.4 ghz and I idle at 49c too.. But now my ITE SmartGuardian doesnt seem to want to open up its interface, just hides in the bottom. Anyone know how to fix this?

Thanks

I have a 1.4ghz with retail heatsink.
I removed the thermal tape that came with the heatsink and replaced it with some silicon thermal paste.
It's idling at 40 C' right now and 46 C' during full load.
