Retail game + steam expansion

Just curious but I have several retail copies of Company of Heroes that I purchased for lan play. I want to get one of both of the expansions through steam but I'm not sure if that will work. I tried to add my CoH retail to steam using the key (like I did with UT3) but it did not work so I assume it's not setup that way. Anyone know if I can add a steam expansion to a retail CoH install?

If your curious the reason I want it via steam is due to timming. My wife is out of town this weekend and once I'm done with my hikes I need something to do while my legs cool off. I don't want to pay local retail prices + tax and an online order won't make it in time.

thanks!

All the Company of Heroes games are seperate. You don't need one to own the other. You can buy them from where ever you want and they will work fine. I've downloaded patches and add-ons and installed them onto Steam games so it should work fine.

I have a retail copy of CoH Gold (Original + Opposing Fronts) and after a bunch of updates, it added a bunch of extra stuff on the main menu showing the new campaigns from the latest expansion. They have lock icons on them, but when I click them, they ask me to enter a CD key, either from the retail version or from Steam. So I figure I could buy Tales of Valor from Steam, right click on it and check the game's CD key, and then enter that in and it'll work.

Thanks for the replies, I'll give it a try and see how it goes.

There's really no reason to add the original game to the expansion. It will tie up a cd key that you could have used as a separate copy for no good reason. You get the full multiplayer game with Tales of Valor anyway, as well as the new units and armies, who cares about single player?

I care about singleplayer. I enjoy good singleplayer experiences more.

I have not tried it yet, been working very late and was planning on trying it tonight since my wife is gone. I, for one, am doing this only for the single player. The only CoH multi I have done and care to do is LAN play, otherwise all I want is the single.

I just assumed I had to have the main game installed in order to actually install the expansion and use the single player campaign, or are these comepletly stand alone?

Company of Heroes doesn't care about Steam at all. You don't even need Steam running to play a CoH purchased through Steam.
CoH uses Relic Online to validate your stuff for online play.
Single Player, if you have no connection to Relic Online because either no internet or it's down, requires some form of media, which can either be a disc, or it validates it through Steam if you have a Steam copy, but that's only if it cannot connect to Relic Online.
All the CD keys are linked to your Relic Online account.

Thanks for the info. I'll pick up one or both of the expansions tonight and give it a go.

When you already own another copy of the single player game? He's considering buying the expansion and linking the two together. The expansions are stand-alone, so there's not really a reason to tie up two cd keys on one computer.
