I work at Home Depot and this guy came in and wanted to return a 5 gallon pail of tinted exterior primer. We dont return tinted paint.... he said that we sold him the wrong stuff, that he wanted paint, not primer and the colour was all wrong. Well, the paint didnt last cause you used a primer and thats it and the colour didnt match because tinted primers are always lighter that the topcoat you put over them. He tried to argue that he had asked for paint and they must of mistakenly given him primer. But, the guy who sold it to him remembered him and remembered he had specifically asked for 2 5gallon pails of primer, and thats all he was going to use. He even told him that it wasnt going to work and he said yes it would. I hate people who lie to try and get their money back after they messed up because they didnt listen to people who actually know what they are doing. If you mess up something because you are dumb dont expect us to refund your money!!!!

No, this point can not be stressed enough. I work in a retail and on a daily basis I'm blown away by the complete and utter lack of common sense people exercise.

People need to be shown how to be proper consumers.

Yeah I agree. I worked in retail in a hardware store in the paint deptartment. I seen stuff like this too 🙂 What was worse, after the employees and the paint manager would tell the customer they couldn't do stuff like that, the store manager would come by and say to take it back ANYWAY. Even when he knew the customer was in the wrong.

Sidenote: Its not just the customers sometimes, in computer stores (example: BB or CUSA) its sometimes the employees who are clueless. I read something somewhere. The differance between a used car salesman and a computer salesman? The used car salesman knows when he lies to the customer. This can be surprisingly accurate.

there is only one manager at our store asside from me who will stick to company policy... all the others would of taken it back......

Friend of mine worked in Sears paint department many years ago. He told me about a customer trying to return paint without a receipt. No problem, right? He gives the customer X amount of money and the customer complains that's the sale price, and he had purchased it at FULL price. Thing is, Sears paint was perpetually on sale in those days. My friend stuck to his guns and wouldn't budge. Customer sought out a manager who... you guessed it, coughed up the full price. I heard this story a few times because my friend was so pissed off about it.

Ok, your customer was a LIAR, but you can't believe everyone who shops is stupid. I've bought paint from some very challenged associates before, and often have to help people give me correct change. You don't have to be a friggin genius to operate a cash register! 😛

Are you the paint manager?

I think this is more of a problem in the US because people have more money than other countries where they can't afford to make a wrong choice since many places don't even offer returns...

The obvious solution is, dont shop at places that dont offer returns 🙂 They will go out of business. I lived in Germany for a year and most places I shopped would accept some form of return, or exchange, or if defective, etc. So I don't think other countries (at least the more developed ones) have a huge problem with this like you seem to imply. And if American citizens make more, its because our system works better 🙂 The other people need to move here 🙂 (I'm talking LEGALLY, like green card or whatever).

As in home depot? Dang good. Most of those kinda retail jobs will hire a lot of people part time since they have high turnover. Lots of people leaving and coming. Especially if you put in for cashier. Just stop in and ask them what kinda people they need at the moment, and then put in that position as the first choice on the application 🙂

Right on! I can't deal with stupid customers either, but what can we do? Customer will always find way to win, either thru managers or corporate.

I work retail in the paint department at walmart. Customers have been extremely cranky the last few days. I got in trouble today because of the one bitch.

Short version: I was busy taking apart a swing set for a customer and I needed a rubber mallet so I went inside to the paint counter. Bitch needed paint mixed and I explained that I was busy and what I was doing. I told her I'd be back in less than 5 minutes and everyone else working at that time was either stuck on cash register or didn't know how to mix paint. She was demanding and I just told her how it was but that wasn't a good enough answer.

Bitch calls the store manager to complain about me even though someone did show up like a minute after I went back outside. I get to work and she changed the story to: he was going to break and said he wouldn't mix paint for me. Store manager gave her paint to her for free and gave her a gift card too and then he yelled at me and complained to me before asking what really happened. I'm still pissed off at him.

I just had that happen to me last night. A customer brought in a "broken" phone for me to change the housing out into a new housing. Little did I know the microphone was already broken and this was their ultimate plan to get a new phone altogether. So I change out the housing and next thing I know the microphone doesn't work. The customer had to leave so she left. They call and threaten me about telling my manager (I'm the manager) and all this crap. They come today and I try to fix it again, no go. I end up having to give my personal phone to them in a trade so that they would be happy.

And to top it off they wanted me to give them a free housing!!!
