Socket 939 chips are a dead end. Only the upgraders keep it afloat.
OEMs shifted to Socket AM2 a lot quicker than AMD had hoped, leaving the company with a shortage of AM2 CPUs and an excess of old chips.

Is the heatsink on this the heat pipe style that is thought to be so good? If not, maybe the cheaper OEM chip at Monarch is a good idea. (Yeah, I know Retail = Warranty. Warranty shmorranty. Who cares?)

It's the one with the 70mm fan. There is another one with an 80mm fan.

Thanks, that sold me. This is dual core and overclockable like crazy, probably as good as I'm ever going to get with this socket 939 mobo. I don't think I want to spring for an AM2 mobo, DDR2 memory and a PCI-e video card, which will cost a bundle just to bring up to where I am already.

As for waiting for the price to go lower:

Of course, it may. But take a look at this. The AM2 version (which adds Virtualization support) is only a $10 premium. That tells me what primarily is governing the price is not that 939 is kaput, but that at this price AMD can sell against the price-setting-competition, Intel. Yes AMD is dumping inventory, but for what it can get at the market price. So don't expect the price to drop much until Intel challenges at this price. Judging by the number of reviews on Newegg. people are jumping all over this one. Why would any sane person or company sell for less than what they can readily get? Don't be silly.

In addition, people, once we are past Black Friday, expect computer equipment prices to be up, not down, until maybe February. Computer prices always seem to do this. Right here is the low spot (normally) for the year.

Third, don't over expect. Don't assume you can predict the future reliably. I waited on the premium chips to go down when socket A was being phased into the AMD64 line. But the good socket A chips never got all that low, and now they are not available. The few socket A chips you can find won't even OC over about 2000MHz. When AMD quits making 'em, the price of the remaining inventory maintains or goes up, and then becomes unavailable.

I ordered mine on Friday, can't wait for it to get here. It will be a nice upgrade from my 2800+ sempron.

I think we're living in different worlds.

Because it's a retail CPU with free shipping making it either a few bucks cheaper than usual or the same price OEM chips were previously going for. Spending $20 more on an E6300 requires spending ~$100 to get a value motherboard to go along with it, when good 939 boards can be had for about half that price. Not to mention having to move to DDR2, for people that don't want to spend more and make a complete system overhaul, this is a good deal.

Even so they're hardly moving at this price.
In order to clear up the inventory AMD will have no choice but to start cutting prices on a much larger scale.
In a couple of months expect them to cost half as much of what they're selling for right now.

Yeah, wouldnt get one for more than $100, and I'll be laughing when these go for $90 in a month or two.

I just got a retail one for under $100 +shipping from a friend in Canada.

Why? Im not laughing at the people who paid 200-300$ for these 6 months ago. Its just the breaks with PC's Stuff is allways cheaper at some point in time after you purchase. Will they get cheaper? Of course, but if the chip suits your needs right now and the price is within your budget go for it and dont look back. Or wait 2-3 months and get it cheaper, big deal. I picked up mine at this price and I dont care who laughs at me. :p

It's pretty heavy with a heatsink.
Plus the box and packing material.
Still kinda excessive.
Spare heatsinks? LOL

Looks like they may have gotten a shipment in..? I try the 999 thing, but it just adjusts my order to 100, the maximum number that can be ordered. But I try it out on 170 and it shows 52...

I'm really debating on upgrading my 3200+ Venice to this, especially since I've got an X1900XT 512 and 2 gigs of OCZ Platinum on the way. I know my DFI sli-dr wouldn't have a problem ocing this... Ugh, decisions...

EDIT: Well I pulled the trigger and ordered one, figure after I sell my 3200 this price is really nice...

Yes, but low upgrade cost is what allows some people to upgrade at all. Who already has a nice socket 939 board with 2GB premium DDR and a low end single core CPU? Many do. How much will it cost to upgrade to a dual core that potentially can clock near 3GHz? $159. How much to get a similar socket AM2 or LGA 775 setup? Well, start with $150 for a good board and $250+ for DDR2 800...
