My Personal Tips on Buying DVDS:
[*]Always check for MIJ (Made in Japan), most of the time it'll provide top tier quality *personal preference*
[*]Use programs like DVDIdentifier to find out what DVD media OEM's you're getting
[*]Then use sites like http://www.nomorecoasters.com (a little outdated) and http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia to determine what type of DVD stepping codes you'd get and what are proven good or bad
[*]Also use sites like http://www.cdrinfo.com and http://www.cdfreaks.comto find out how well the quality of DVD burners are actually doing
[*]If you can afford it, get a Lite-On or NEC to check out how well your DVDs are burning and scan them for quality using (for instance) http://www.cdspeed2000.com
[*]What's the difference between DVD-R and DVD+R? I just chose these random 4 links: A B C D
[*]But aside from the specs, the truth is that for the end user there is no difference between +R and -R, since most burners and DVD players supports them both.

Enjoy!

I gave up on MIJ. The MIJ sony + and -R were no better than the MIT sony media as far as immidiate burn quality. I think my last purchase of very high quality verbatim +R were also not made in japan. I was very impressed with the burn quality of the playo made in china +r media from staples recently. They are still available for $20 for 50 pack but I'd wait for a sale of <$10 per50. The verbatims have been going on sale regularly for $.30 disk and seem to be the safest bet. Recenly I've had lousy TDK, Fuji,Sony and Memorex. They just barely pass a quality test when burned on my benq. Using 4 other burners they are all horrible failures. Anyone know how phillips are doing currently. I have some old 4x ones that my benq can burn at 16x with great quality.

Sorry to hear that. The TY MIJ have pretty much been very consistent in high burn qualities for me, between the 3540A, DVR-110D, and SHW-160P6S. Maybe you got Sony-Branded MIJ (such as SONY16D1) which were still pretty decent for me, but not TY decent.

None of Verbatim's disks are MIJ, but their own high quality Taiwan factories.

Even though http://www.nomorecoasters.com regards MCC as the only top tier MIT, I've had a little trouble with their +R's in high PI rates, but their -R's are just great.

No idea about Philips. I'm too scared to buy MIT media (aside from trying out MCC to find out for myself about the quality).

MIJ used to be consistent between Sony, TDK, and Fuji, but most recently, I've only seen MIJ for Sony (sadly).

I wish I had made this list for last week to share, since there was Sony galore (lots of PM opportunities) :( I'm glad I stocked up, though.
