Searched and didn't find.
At the Bayarea Fry's (and maybe other locations as well), there is a retail boxed Athlon 64 3000+ with an ECS NForce 3A motherboard for 119.99 OTD. SKU# is 4811530
The same deal is at Outpost for 129.99 plus shipping. I don't know if it's the 90nm Venice or the 130 nm Newcastle. Maybe someone can shed some light. It's a good deal because the Venice is 116.99 shipped at Newegg and for some reason the Newcastle is 139.99 shipped.

Here's a link to the deal at Outpost. Athlon A64 3000+ plus Motherboard

How is this too pricey? It's the cheapest price around for this retail CPU and a motherboard. The cheapest price for a retail A64 3000+ is 116.99 shipped for the CPU alone at Newegg or Chief value. If you have a better deal for this CPU or CPU/mobo combo, post it.

Please, don't post info about overclocking a Sempron to whatever speeds because there are people out here that aren't interested in doing that. Many people just want to plop the motherboard and CPU in the case and be done with it.

He's not saying this is a bad deal for this chip. I think he is saying that for the price there are better options. and I'm sure it involves a sempron 😉
and why are you interested in AMD if it is not to OC?

This is the A64 754 socket CPU, not 939! The A64 939 supports dual channel and is based on Venice core. Nominal overclock is 2.4 to 2.5GHz with some approaching +2.6GHz.

The 256K cache Sempron 3100/ECS combo last week went for $80 at Fry's, and I'm sure this deal will resurface this month.

If one DOES NOT overclock the CPU, then there is even less incentive to move to the A64/ECS combo. Per my previous post, this A64 754 comes with 512K cache, which amounts to NO more than about 50MHz CPU core speed. Why pay another $40 for such a small bump in performance?

I'd rather pay another $40 for the ECS RX480-A/A64 3200 939 combo for $160 (another common special at Fry's/Outpost).

If you wander back to Anandtech's review comparing the 3100 Semperon with the 2800 A64, the A64 out performed the Semperon in most tests. The 3000 is faster.

If you don't OC either, the Sempron 3100+ is 1.8Ghz with 256 KB L2 and the A64 3000+ is 2.0 GHz with 512 KB L2 cache. Looks like 200+ MHz incrase at stock to me.

This deal is available thru tomorrow at SoCal Fry's also. By phone today I was told the CPU is an ADA3000BXBOX, E6 stepping, 90nm SOI.
They also have the Sempron 2800+ combo with the ECS nForce3-A for 69.99, thru tomorrow only, but I couldn't get the OPN to figure out if it's 64bit capable or not.

The maximum speed penalty between an A64 939 and a Sempron 754 (same core speed) is less than 150MHz! This delta is further reduced if we're comparing A64 754 with Sempron 754 because the A64 754 cannot run in dual channel mode. Therefore, the only advantage with the A64 754 is the 512 vs 256 cache.

If you don't plan to overclock the A64 3000 754 Venice, then it would be illogical to pay a 50% price premium over the Sempron 3100 for another 200MHz bump in core speed. The Sempron 3100 Paris can easily reach 2.3GHz. The 3000 Venice should average around 2.5GHz. Still no huge bargain when one factors in the $120 price tag.

The 2800 Sempron is based on the Winchester core with 256K 90nm and 64 bit. BTW, the 3100 Paris is also 64 bit capable. I've had problem pushing the 2800 Sempron beyond 2.1GHz. This same MB/RAM combo was able to run the Sempron 3100 at 2.45GHz.

The Webster/NASA Rd. 1 Fry's has this deal also, and last week the Sempron 2800+ was $70, I believe. I see the 3100+ and 2800+ combos so often, it's hard to remember which one is which, but the 3100+ would be the way to go if you want to get a nice, solid budget system. That ECS nForce3 board actually seems decent, although I'm sure it would be the limiting factor in your overclock. You can't beat it for the price, though. If you're going for a Venice core, you might as well go 939 to take advantage of the improved memory controller. Sempron has pretty much taken over 754, and I think that was the plan all along. These Semprons at Fry's aren't 64-bit enabled, though, or at least none of them were the 3 times I tried to get the clerk to grab one from the cage. I think Fry's is trying to liquidate their old stock, but even if it's only 32-bit, that's a great deal.

All nine of my Sempron 3100 Paris from Fry's were 64 bit enabled. The 2800 is a Winchester core with 256K and x86-64. I've pushed the ECS up to 280MHz. Some have posted 290MHz.
