Retail assistant managers

I got a friend still in college that was offered a full time assistant manager position at a Goodwill store.

He is wondering what to expect/ask for salary. I have no clue so I came to ATOT to find out

The title is very broad.

I think my friend who was the assistant manager (step under the store manager) at mervyns was making high 40's. Went over to steve & berry's with a slight increase in pay and is looking forward to trying to find another job in Jan when they go out of business as well.

Depends on which industry. However, if it's Goodwill, then Goodluck :frown: Better off pumping gas so you don't have to deal with the 47-chromosome coworkers who can't follow direction.

At Wal*Mart I believe it was around $30k, maybe a tad less. 28? Back around 2003 anyway.

You friend is wildly overqualified for that position. Asst manager is 1 step up from the hourly no-names. It's for HS grads, not college grads.

An asst. manager at a supermarket can make 40K...

At goodwill, though....I would imagine high 20's to low 30's.

Salaried managers are at the command of the store manager. If they say you have to work nightshift, or if you have to do double shifts, you do it. You're pretty much on call 24/7 too.


That was at Walmart. Above Assistant Managers come the co-managers. Then you're starting to look at some bigger bucks, and then there's the store manager.


At Walmart, Support Manager would be the highest I'd ever want to go, though they work those people pretty hard. At that level, you're still paid hourly though, so if they want you to work insane hours, you're compensated for it. Hourly, I'd say that support managers made at least as much as the assistant managers, just because of the hourly-vs-salaried pay schemes.

Thats about right and as somebody mentioned employees at goodwill are not your typical surburban mall retail employees. Because of the nauture of Goodwills business, employees are often mentally challenged, homeless or almost homeless, or have other serious issues.

i'm ASM at a retail store and it's about 36k a year this is my first job out of college, and i started 6 months ago

Non-profit usually has little effect on salaries. It's a business like any other... the only difference is how revenues are distributed.
