If I get the retail version with fan and heatsink, then that should be okay (if I don't plan to overclock.

Does the retail come with thermal compound?

You should be fine if you're going to be using the fan that comes with the processor. I believe there is some thermal tape under the heatsink...I installed one of these for my friend...but I forget. ;) Hope this helps.

AMD would not have included the heatsink/fan if they felt that it didn't do a proper job of cooling the processor at the advertised speed. The heatsink has a Chromerics thermal pad attached to it. Simply remove the cover and attach it to the cpu.

Well that's what I figured...that AMD would not include a poor HS. So I do not need any compound at all? Thanks for your patience!

If you remove the heatsink after it has been installed, you will need new thermal compound. I recommend Arctic Silver II over those nasty, hard to work with, Chromeric TP's.
