Reseller Ratings Review
I know this isn't the hottest deal, but there haven't been any posts about the KT7. I've heard it is the best for OCing the Durons that have been posted lately.
This is going for $133 here and two day shipping is $12. It is retail, so Abit provides a one year warranty. They claim a 30 day money back guarantee, but half of the people at reseller ratings seemed to have trouble returning.
Please post if you can find a better deal.
BTW: KT7-RAID is the next item down. Extra $22.
EDIT: Company is in NY. Not so hot for NYers after tax. Also, I am not positive as to whether this is in stock.

Microbarn.com has it for $131.00, and I got mine in 2 days from North Carolina to Florida using standard UPS ground.

I just ordered an Abit KT7 from Essential Computers this week. I am satisfied with the company and they shipped the product promptly. Delivery was quick with the FedEx special and unlike UPS, FedEx actually will deliver the product to my house, unlike how my UPS package always is misdelivered somewhere else in the city...

I have been flip-flopping back and forth with the Asus and Abit so I finally decided to go with Abit. (I am so sick of reading reviews and forums about the pros and cons!)

Went with the Essential Computer deal because the microbarn thing had a note about delayed shipping because of popularity. Hopefully, essential has it in stock and will ship right away.

I'm sure this has been debated thoroughly but I decided to not get the raid and just use a modified Promise card. Was that a good idea or should I call back and get the raid?
I will be using 2 Maxtor 40gigs 7200rpm. I am also a little confused as to the real benefits of a raid setup? I read different comments that actual speed is from 10% to double, anyone got the real scoop?

I know I should be asking in another hardware forum but since I just ordered this deal I need to find out quick so I can cancel/modify my order.

Thanks for any help!

EDIT- Thanks loogie for the reply!

The promise card yields better performance than the onboard highpoint on the kt7-raid. Furthermore, if you were to upgrade, you could just move the promise card over to your new motherboard.

Interesting.
What purpose, exactly, does a promise card or RAID serve?
And when I said 30 day money back guarantee, I meant that essencom.com offers that, not Abit.

Raid is a setup where two or more drives share the data and when the cpu reads/writes you essentially double the amount of data in the same time. But you will only see minor improvements in seek/access times/

From what I have garnered, you won't see any major improvements unless your using high bandwidth applications (video editing, photo, etc)

Other than than it's just a marginal improvement for everyday business apps.

I'm sure someone else has a more educated reply.

i was very pleased by both Microbarn and the KT7.

overclocking is all done in bios with those durons that still have the L1 leads closed.

Essential Comp sent my board out today... they even gave me a call at my apartment. So I guess that puts them on my buyers list again! They got my board today and are shipping my kt7 today. I would order from them again =)

That's cool, sleepy. Sounds like a decent place to buy from. I suppose I will give it a shot, as I don't forsee any spectacular deals on this board popping up in the near future. But I still need to get my memory, and am waiting for some parts for my system to ship anyhow, so I will wait another day.

If I upgrade my mobo PII to the kt7 w/ duron, will my win98 on my present drive load up without modification if all the present pci cards are transfered to the new mobo or will i have to reinstall the windows?

thanks

For the most part it SHOULD load up just fine. In theory you could just transfer and let it boot up. What I do before I upgrade a mobo is go into the system properties device manager (right click on my computer and select prperties. Then click on device manager tab) and remove everything associated with the motherboard. This usually includes everything in system devices, ports, floppy disk, and hard disk controllers. Then I power down, put in new mobo, swap everything, tweak the BIOS, and then let it boot all the way to windows and it should detect all the stuff associated with the new mobo and you can pop in the driver disk that comes with the mobo and set her up. Then I get to overclocking once it is stable at default speeds. Good luck and come back to the anadtech forums if you have any problems, they have always been helpful for me here!
