Retail 1.2Ghz locked or unlocked?

Hey guys. I was wondering that since most of you get the OEM versions of CPUs, I was wondering if the RETAIL 1.2Ghz (200Mhz bus) come locked or unlocked? I'd like to get a system going with the Asus A7V133 and run 9x133, so I will have a 266Mhz bus. I don't intend to OC this system, since it's going to be sold. I plan to cool with Alpha PAL6035 with Sanyo Denki fan and Antec SX1030. If anyone knows of a place that sells ONLY unlocked retail CPUs, please tell me. If need be, tell me where you got your OEM unlocked 1.2Ghz. Thanks a lot everyone.

Well I don't think there is a definite difference between retail and OEM. It depends on which one you get really. If you DO get a locked one then do the pencil trick to make it unlocked again! Pencil trick is when you use a pencil (Graphite) to link up the Level 1 bridges.

Hope this helped,

Albert.

to my knowledge 90% or more of the 1.2 Ghz cpu's are unlocked. the L1 bridges never got cut. so it is all luck of the draw. I think you will have better luck with a cpu that is a late week, so buy from a place that sells a large amount of cpu's and doesn't sell pretested overclocked cpu's

im no expert on the subject, but from what ive read i thought that it was only when thunderbirds and durons were still pretty new that you could find cpu's that were 'unlocked' from the factory. i was under the impression that all tbirds and durons are locked now.

should I wait for a T-bird (C)266 FSB or buy the Tbird 200 FSB I am in no huge rush as I still need to get a case.
I just heard that in germany they reviewed there is more information than anand reviewed on the K7T Turbo RAID and the 133 mhz anyone that knows more about it please inform me I am about to get this board and the above CPU is a consideration for a 2 in one deal.

yes it seems that the the turbo is one of the better boards i have seen on the web, especially for stability. I would get the 200 mhz FSB t-bird rather than the 266 mhz FSB t-bird because the later of the two has a huge price premium for something that can be unlocked with a #2 pencil or probably lucky enough to have one that is already unlocked. Hope this helps.

I just got a 1.2ghz from Peach Pc about a week ago. Good Price. Came fast. Unlocked. OEM. May I ask one question? Why are you buying a retail chip? For the warranty?

I haven't seen anybody post too much about the retail 1.2Ghz. Didn't it just start hitting the shelves?

HTH

Yeah, it's been out now for a while. Thank you for telling me where you bought your chip. I will now order mine via Peach PC. You da man. By the way, does the CPU itself have any annoying stickers on it? I hate those things on OEM chips. Apparently, that's how the ship now, eh? I like the chip to be clean. I had some bad experiences in the past with bent pins, damaged packaging, etc. with OEM chips. I would like the case sticker from the retail box, the warranty is an added bonus 🙂 LOL! You gotta have that case sticker, ya know 😉

Thanks again.

jamesbond007;

No stickers on mine. They seem to have packaged OK. First time I had ever bought from them. I was a little worried but I was in a hurry at that point. The first company I had ordered from(with a higher resellerrating)jacked me around. Sent me an e-mail confirming shipment--FedEx 2nd day. I called them a week later only to be told the chips were not in stock and had to be ordered from overseas!

Peach sent the chip overnight at my request(and my cost).

I picked them because of their prices and because another anandtech member had recently(this was a few weeks ago) posted good overclocking results from a chip he had purchased there.

Kick a$$! Hehe. That's awesome man. Yeah, I just ordered my chip tonight here. Hopefully will get it up and running soon. I just want the regular 1.2Ghz it was made to run by using 9x133. If I set the multipliers and FSB in the BIOS, when I power off, are those settings going to stay there? I heard that when a person turns off the machine and powers it down, the overclocked settings get changed???? I dunno. I don't want to OC, just run 266Mhz bus and take full advantage of my new Asus A7V133. Thanks for the replies.
