Resurrecting a dead BIOS

Not sure where to post this, so I'm trying here...

I have read that you can re-flash a dead BIOS (one that will not post) by booting up a different computer, starting the flash program and switching ROM chips (i.e. removing the good chip and putting the bad one in it's place) just before executing the flash. Makes sense, but I want to know do you have to have the same motherboard as the one with the dead BIOS? I would think it wouldn't matter since you are basically using the good board to program a ROM chip, as long as you don't re-boot when you are finished.

yes, you can do this, but sometimes it may not work with with different bios chips and different bios sizes. i have done this on a soyotek to an aopen to restore my soyo bios. but i have failed with an asus and soyo when the firmware sizes were different. one was 2 mbit, another was 1.5. so be careful, and good luck.
