Resume question

Just curious - is it better to list all your jobs and have a crowded resume (5 jobs since July 99, 2 of them were temp jobs) or to leave a temp job off to free up your resume, but have a slight gap in employment dates?

My previous job before my current one was a 2 month temporary job - ended in Sept 03 - my job before that one was 8 months ago, left in December of 02. (My grandpa was sick and passed away b/t the time from October - November of 03, so that explains that gap) If I were to leave that temp job up to give my resume some more room, I'd have an 11 month gap between employment. (I took off for those 8 months b/t Jan03 - Aug03 to concentrate on finishing college)

Would it be wiser to leave that 2 month temp job off and have some more room, leave it on there and have a crowded resume, or take off an older job? (All my older jobs were at least 1.5 years worth of work though)

Good question, and the answer to good questions always seems to be "It depends". 🙁

First, lemme establish some credentials. I've done hundreds of interviews (as the interviewer and the interviewee). I ran my own division at a small outfit, and even led the hiring for a group at Microsoft. I know a whole lot about being interviewed and doing interviews.

5 jobs in 4 years is gonna raise some eyebrows and make folks curious, if not downright toss your resume into the trash. Even if you leave off one job, that still has a general smell to it. You better have reasons (and good reasons, not "Man, those SOBs told me to sweep the floor, and that wasn't on my job duty!") for bailing out of those jobs. Good reasons can include "Time to go back to school full time." or "Family member deathly ill, needed care."

Resumes are often overrated. Their sole purpose is to get you an interview. Do no be suckered into the idea that they get folks jobs. And, it's way past me bedtime.
