resume question

what are you supposed to put on the cover letter?? I would guess name and contact info, but that would only take up about 4 lines....do you use a huge font or something? I know, dumb question, but what else could you expect from me?

A cover letter explains to them why you would be perfect for the job you are applying for.. you sell yourself. make them want to look at your resume.

so, put all of my endearing qualities on there?? such as hard worker, self motivated....yada yada yada?

You personalize it. Tell them what position you are writing about in the 1st paragraph. The 2nd paragraph should be brief but tell them why you are qualified for the position - specifically mention things in the ad that you have experience with. Third paragraph should wrap it up telling them you look forward for meeting with them to further discuss your qualifications, etc.

Check out some of the big job boards - monster, careerbuilder, etc. - they have tips.

The recruiters/HRs I come across make me wonder if they ever read cover letters.
Usually it's not read at first. You have an HR/Recruiter person going over resumes and stuff. These are not technical people (assuming you're applying for a technical job) and all they do is look for words matching those in the job request. Letters/Resume's with enuf hits more on to the next step where they actually read the cover letter and look at the resume.

Just about every interview I've gone into, I see my resume/cover letter sitting there butchered with a highlighter marking keywords.
