Ok, so I'll be finishing up college in about two weeks and I'm needing to get a resume together so I can start mailing it out and applying for new jobs ASAP. But, I'm 26 and haven't had to do this ever since I've held down a job within the same company since I was 16, which was just an "fill out this application, and we'll call you," type of thing. Ok, I say "ever," but what I mean is not in recent memory where I can recall the important bits beyond name, contact info, where I went to school, etc.

What's a good website or publication that has a good strong outline for me that I can build from? Or do any of you have any advice you'd be willing to share? IIRC some of you are hiring managers or work in HR, or have done interviews so you've at least looked them over, right? I'd appreciate all of your help.

Thanks AToT.

What field are you trying to get into? What degree are you getting? What experience do you have? That will impact how to do the resume.

What do you want to highlight? Imagine that someone is only going to read the top 25% of your resume if you wanted to compel them to read the rest what will you put up there to draw them in. This is going to be based on the job you want.

To really help we need more info. In general you order it by the things you want to highlight. This determines how you will order education, experience and skills. You try as much as possible to list accomplishments and impact rather than just responsibilities.

I've found that projects and accomplishments at previous workplaces or school are better than focusing heavily on what classes you've taken.

Focusing on classes is irrelevant. Did you, however, work on any projects at school that were not necessarily related to a class? What types of accomplishments did you have at the job you held since 16, that aren't typically in the job description, else were goals the company set which you achieved?

Also, (too late for you, but this is targeted at others in school possibly reading this thread) 2 weeks before you graduate is several months late in doing this. Many students have jobs lined up long before they graduate (the ones who get jobs, that is.)

I'm a meat cutter now for a semi-national chain, and I'd like to continue to work with food, but on the corporate side of the fence. My degree will be an A.S. in Business Administration. Experience as far as working a desk job, none I've only ever worked retail, which is why I want to stick with a food based company, because I'm pretty knowledgeable on the subject.

Since I plan on applying to food based companies, I want to highlight that I know food, especially meats, practically inside and out. I'm also familiar with inventory and the basic rundown of my companies' paperwork (daily sales, inventory, ordering, etc.). Also, since the company I work for is consistently rated highly by customers for customer service/satisfaction I do want to highlight that as well since there's a job opening now that will require me to interact with customers so having that experience is a huge plus IMO.

Yes, I wasn't planning on listing any classes, because the A.S. I'll be getting is pretty general. I've taken accounting, marketing, business law, and so on but they weren't specialized, mostly to just get me familiar with the topic. I do plan do go back for a B.S. soon (within two years), but I want to get established so I can pay out of pocket without needing loans (I'll gladly take grants, however).

I didn't work on any projects at school that weren't class related, since I attended online and the campus was 300+ miles away from where I live, it made anything like that pretty much impossible.

Yea, I'll admit I dropped the ball here, but working full-time and going to school full-time didn't offer me much spare time. However, you're correct I should of at least got this started back before the Spring semester started in January. Live and learn I suppose. But, I do currently have a job and will for as long as I need it so it's not like I'm getting thrown to the wolves with nothing, but yea I should of started sooner.

Thanks for the help so far.

Ok, I've got one together right now. I'd appreciate it if anyone would be willing to critique it for me. PM me and I can email it to you.

Thank you

guys, he's just graduating college and has jack for relevant work experience (it seems like), so education is what should be emphasized.

resume order = contact info/education/relevant experience/other (depending on how much space you have left)
