Restricted User Can STILL Install a Program. How?

I'm running W2K Pro, SP2. I have two profiles on this 'puter: myself as the administrator, and the second as a restricted user. To my understanding this second profile should NOT be able install any program. Yet, I found out that he was able to install WinMX yesterday, despite the supposed restriction. When I asked him about this, the wise guy just snickered and smirked. I'm simply curious. Does anyone know how this security measure was danced around? Thank you.

A lot of Windows installers don't actually see if you have admin rights because they don't need them. All you can really do is not allow him to write to the program files dir, root of drive C, etc but then he can still install it to his home directory.

MSI packages usually don't check the user's permissions. Instead they install under the context of the system account. If WINMX is pacakged as an msi, then that is your reason. If it isnt, something else is going on/improperly set up, because users should not be able to install apps.

Well, the strange thing is that I intentionally tried to install other programs under the restricted user's profile, but I was unable. For example, I tried to install AOL Instant Messenger but I was not permitted to do so because it required administrator rights. So, can I assume that it is just a quirk within the WinMX program itself?

since said user can't seem to behave himself (atleast from what I understand from the "feel" of your post, just give him the same restrictions as a guest. he can only write to the my documents folder.
