Restrict access to only 1 program

A question was brought up in my mcse class, here it is

You have a stand alone windows xp pro pc (not on a network) and you want to restrict access to every program except Microsoft Word, so basically no IE, Excel, Solitare, ect. The teacher and everyone thought it would be in group policy's, but none of us were able to do this. Can anyone provide instructions on how to do this, without third party software. Thanks.

Yes, this can be done through Group Policy.

Here's my quick and dirty method:

Create a Limited User account. Pin the shortcut to Word on the Start Menu of that account. Under Task Menu and Start Menu Properties, you can begin to clean up the Start Menu so it is thinned out.

Pin a shortcut to gpedit.msc on the Start Menu of an administrator account. <- This is crucial to undo the effects of GP later on if needed.

Then, using GP, you can then block access to everything else on that PC. Specifically:

* remove all other entries from the Start menu so that only Word remains

* prohibit the user from viewing the contents of the local drives

* diasable the desktop items

* disable Task Manager

There are more steps to really lock EVERYTHING down. But the above steps will turn a PC into a single function kiosk.
