Company had the main DC go down and their previous IT reinstalled into a new "winnt2" directory and now IIS and some of the connections to the
WAN side domains is intermittant. None of the settings were re-set into the new install so its understandable why they are having trouble. I figure
a fresh install and restore from a backup will get most of what is needed back online. Only trouble is connecting the new DC after a fresh install.
Will just giving it the same name and useing the current settings work or is this going to be a big pain? I will have to promote another DC to the
main status but havent done so inh this large of a scale, should I be worried and has anyone done this already? Any help apprieciated.

Some questions I would have is what kind of backup was made?

Another would be what kind of network is it? Legacy or Native 2000?

I am not sure what question you are asking whether to promote another DC before dropping the current Winnt2 machine.

Giving it the same name and Network Settings are something you will definatly need to do but whether it works right off the bat depends on how you have things setup and what kind of backup you made.

Are you concerned about current users that were added and thats why you are asking to promote another DC before taking this one down to sync up the domain list? If so then yes you will need to bring up another DC to sync up the info then change the name afterwards

Santa, its all Win 2000, 3 in the main office and 1 each at the WAN side offices (10), there was a Seagate Backup Exec made on a DLT drive of the system. it only ran IIS and Logins the other two handle Exchange and other tasks. I was asked to come in afterthe fact and knew nothing about this business or how its topography worked so I am making some assumptions on how it would be laid out but in reality everyone does things differently so until I actually sit down and hack away for awhile its all just assumption. :)

Well get down as much info about the current machine as possible.. (backing it up entirely would be wise too) and then reinstall a new machine and setup the network settings the same, Restore the IIS and accounts and give it a whirl. most likley if you copy all the services and IP configurations you should be fine when you promote it to the DC. you shouldn't and probably don't want to bring the newly created DC up at the same time as the current one just in case the machine is whacked and replicates its whackedness to the new machine defeating the purpose of fresh install.

If all else fails you can still restore the machine because you backed it up :)
