Restoring OS partition from Acronis TI, can you do it in Windows?

I backed up 2 or all 3 of the partitions (one of them hidden) on my SSD using Acronis True Image Western Digital Edition to an external USB HD.

Can I restore the backup from Windows on the machine in question or do I need to remove the SSD from the laptop, insert it in an enclosure and take it to another machine and run Acronis there to restore the backup to the laptop's SSD?

You can create the bootable media from within acronis and use that to boot up and do your restoring.

Restoring from within running windows is impossible, even if the programm would alow it the restored files would overwrite system critical files resulting in a system crash.

I see. I've encountered the bootable media idea but didn't comprehend. I'll run Acronis and look for it. Can I do that with a flash drive or do I need to write it to a CD or DVD?

Well, it seems simple enough although I haven't booted from it yet, I created Acronis T.I. bootable media with a spare 2GB SD card I had lying around. It didn't even overwrite the data on the card... nice.

Hey, if it doesn't work I can always do what I did before and remove the SSD from the laptop and put it in my 2.5" enclosure and do the restore on another machine.

Acronis TI is the only program that knows what to do with a .TIB image file. They used to offer a tool to convert the .TIB file to a standard Windows Image format, but I didn't see it in the latest version and it probably isn't included in the WD version.
