I thought this was pretty interesting.

90,000 square foot cable vault. That is just mind boggling. But makes sense given the size of NY. I would hate to have the job of having to replace/repair all that. From the looks of it they're just going to add more fiber though, so that's good news for customers who are on the bad cable pairs, they might get fiber.

We've had cables get water in them at work and a single one of those cables is something like 900 pairs, and it can take a day or two to resplice all that. We have two air dryers in our CO and our smaller COs have a single one. Those tend to sit in a room, more or less out of sight out of mind, but are extremely important. Even without a flood, if pressure is not maintained in the lines if there's any cracks anywhere water starts getting in, and that's bad.

but seriously, what a godsend to new york. fiber is finally becoming cost effective, and while it might cost them to upgrade to fiber they probably wont ever have to do it again. the upgrades will come in the form of the end devices. the hubs, switches, and modems at the end user.

Yeah I think it makes more sense to start using fiber now even if you start off with low end equipment at both ends. The cost to run cable is more expensive than the fiber itself. Especially for neighborhoods where it's all underground feeds. I imagine they have to dig up all the streets anyway where the electrical is underground, so may as well do it while Hydro is doing their part.
