I havent used my ipod in quite awile so when I connected it to my computer I seleceted "restore ipod" (Restores to factory settings and erases all data) for a clean start. Its been "restoring" for awhile now, the same window is up on my screen "Restoring ipod do not disconect". Anyone know how long this is supposed to take? I put my ear to the ipod and couldnt hear the disk spinning or anything is this normal?

It depends, are you using the firewire or usb? is the usb 1.0 or 2.0.
(i have a usb 1.0 on my older comp and it takes awhile.)

not sure about why you would have to restore, that tends to be a last resort, (i believe you lose all your songs, unless thats ok)

i let it do its thing when i go to bed and hope for the best in the morning..

try this:

its firewire that Im using to connect

The reason I chose to restore was I was having problems with access and authorization of music and putting it on the ipod

I hope its done before tonight because I got a plane to catch at and I have to leave at like 4:00 in the morning

Thanks for the link

Sorry to hijack the thread but you said your ipod works with USB 1.0? I am just askign because I know USB 2.0 devices should be backwards compatible but when I initially tried my ipod using my USB 1.0 ports WinXP wouldn't recognize it so I just bought a USB 2.0 controller card.

dont think your comments constitute a hijacking... hehe.

but your right. my comp has a 1.0 usb so it would connect just took freaking forever..and ever .. and ever...

so i went out and bought a firewire and it has helped..

(funny i have 2 sons with ipods and the 1st son that connected via usb in the front of the pc, he connects like within 10 mins or so.. my 2nd son (via usb in front, took like 4 hrs)
so i created a sep account for him and he uses firewire.

it should automatically open when your comp sees the device..not sure really.

you may also have to upload the latest drivers for it.. go to the link and ask there.. more ipods users then here..
