restoring from windows 8.1

Hi, i'm trying to restore a system image from windows 8 after having installed 8.1. I don't have a recovery disk from windows 8, just the system image. I tried using a recovery disk from 8.1, and it's simply not working.

After loading from the recovery disk, selecting the image used to restore from, i get this error message. "restore failed because a disk which was critical at backup is excluded. to continue you need to either remove the disk from exclusion list or detach it from machine or clean it using diskpart, and then retry restore..."

the only disks I have on the machine are the backup disk (external), the recovery disk (usb thumb drive), and the system disk (internal ssd). I don't understand what's going wrong.
