Question Restore Windows XP Mode

Every few weeks, my Widows XP Mode breaks (Windows 7 Pro).
The desktop icon looks for "C:\Users\Z170-1\Virtual Machines\Windows XP Mode 2.vmcx"
This causes loss of all work in XP Mode since my last cloned drive.

After today's failure to start XP Mode,
I used cmd.exe to inspect C:\Users\Z170-1\Virtual Machines;
and the line Windows XP Mode 2.vmcx has vanished.

How do I re-enter Windows XP Mode 2.vmcx in C\Users\Z170-1\Virtual Machines?
I have tried as administrator, but it has not worked.
Guess my DOS skills are fading.

Thanks for helping.

You would have to start cmd with admin rights and set up User Account Control to not ask too many questions, but even that might not be enough.

Maybe you should look into why the file disappears in the first place, like do you have some cleaning software that does delete unused files or something?

Or a HDD/SSD that's failing, and that's causing the file to disappear. Those VM image files are fairly large, I think. So there's a greater chance that some disk corruption could "eat" the file.

I clone my drive about every other week. Many times I use the clone as the primary drive.
Hence, I doubt it is the drive per se. Each clone has generally worked fine for a week to a month.
These several drives are all Samsung SSDs, with relatively low writes.

I have suspected windows updates, ccleaner/registry cleaner, and my AGV Internet Security.
Consequently for the past couple months, I have not run ccleaner/registry cleaner or AVG scanning until AFTER I have a fresh clone.
BUT, after cloning and then using ccleaner and scanning with AGV,
NO PROBLEMS arose any time soon, as a result of running them.

I hope to learn how to reinstate the missing line, via cmd.exe as administrator. Then, any time the problem recurs, it will be an easy fix.

I don't understand TheELF, regarding User Account Control.

I have a cmd.exe icon on my desktop, and right click that to run as administrator,
but have not succeeded in replacing the missing line
Windows XP Mode 2.vmcx
in the C:\Users\Z170-1\Virtual Machines\ folder.
This folder now contains only desktop.ini
It should also have a second line Windows XP Mode 2.vmcx

I would appreciate detailed steps describing how to re-enter the missing line.
