drive locked up when winrar had an error extracting a file, on reboot 1 of the 2 partitions lists as unformatted- however, I have ntfs rstudio installed, it lists all the directories as being there but can't recover fat32.

there is a fix at microsoft.com, but it requires creating a 'new' partition in computer management/storage/disk management,

except there is no such corresponding command available.

I have no other hard drive to recover the files too (all are full, key files are on this drive)

I think that if yo are recoering data, then you need extra disk space.

The reasoning goes as follows.

you have x1 - x2 - x3 files.
While you are recovering x1 file, it has to be written somewhere. Where? probably onto x2 or x3.

Therefore - you will only be able to restore a random 50% of your files in theory.

Time to get a new hdd.

there are some tools for windows 2000 that I found through a google search (can download them from MS webstie), one allowed my to copy the backup value for the fat32 partition from sector 6 to sector 0, and everything magically reappeared :)
