Resting heart rate high?

I just started checking it regularly after this recent streak of insomnia.

Is 100bpm high? Mind you, I haven't exercised in a while nor do I do laborous tasks.

What could cause this?

Well, I'm no doctor, so I might be wrong, but at 23, somewhat fit but by no means a health junkie, I'm a shade under 60BPM. I think the kicker for me is that fat people tend to have higher rates, and athletic people tend to have lower...that convinces me that lower is better.

It's very high. You're obviously out of shape, so start working out.

Or you have a heart disease that makes it beat faster.

When i was very out of shape mine didn't go higher than 70.

I know I am out of shape, but I am not fat... just 20lbs overweight.

6'2" @225lbs.

I have a pretty good idea what is contributing to all this... just too much of a dousche to have kept it from getting out of hand.

I have been drinking just about every night this past 2 months... vacation and fall semester startup. Plus I smoke a pack a day and eat hotpockets as my main source of nutritional intake.

I think I am gonna do a cold turkey on all three things for a couple days and just go bike riding around gainesville with the vision:m on.

I need a serious system flush.

If you're in gainesville, there is a really nice trail starting on Archer near North South drive (now gale lemerand) that goes past main street, then up waldo road. We took it for about 20 miles one way a few weeks ago, there are even water fountains/benches in case you need a break, but I would definitely bring a few water bottles (I bring my 3 liter camelback) with you.

I'm 6"2, 235 lbs, in reasonable but certainly not great shape... resting heart rate around 70.

See your doctor.

The heart is a muscle. If you do not condition it / train it, it will not be as efficient; hence the reasoning why an athlete's heart rate is usually lower.

I'm at 62 this morning. That pretty normal. When I ran it was lower 50s.

Quitting smoking could help you tremendously. (plus it might help your teeth not look yellow, and you breath, hair and clothes not smell like ash, etc...)

a nurse once got me at 48...I had been napping in the waiting room, this was while in cross country season.

Yeah, same thing happened to me as well. Just been snoozing in the lobby and had been running all summer. They called me in and my resting rate was 45.

...I forget what I was there for....messed up hand or something.

thanks for the advice and proper reamings everyone...

I def have gotta get on top of this.

I want to get a full physical and bloodwork done, but I have no insurance... so whenever financial aid comes in, I'll see if I can go that route.

Otherwise, HELLO Dr. Riviera

Alright guys, stop scaring the poor boy, medically we dont define tachycardia until you are >100BPM resting pulse.

Every person is hard wired really with a different resting pulse rate. Exercise, or lack thereof can change that. I've seen young fit patients while pulses in the 90-100s. It just depends on the person.

However, OP considering your diet and social habits you need to lower the drinking down to only once or twice a week and NOT binge those days. Having a couple beers once or twice a week can actually be good for you. Obviously you need to kick the smoking habit, which might be contributing to your higher pulse rate. And get better dietary habits!!!

And finally, EXERCISE!!!!!!!!

Find a free or low cost clinic that will give you a checking out and run some basic metabolic profile(a blood test thats checks, electrolytes, BUN, Creatinine, Cholesterol levels, and Protein levels) on you.

Got it, I'll check with the UF health services and see if there is a good cheap way of figuring out what I got going on inside my body.

6'2" @225lbs.

I'm 6'2" - 210 lbs, and could stand to loose about 15 lbs. I'd say you are at least 30 lbs overweight. Not obese though.

Ideal weight for 6'2" is less than 195 lbs depending on your stature (i.e. wide shoulders).

I had my wisdom teeth extracted, and i was laying on the chair. I think my average bpm was like 63 or so, but if i really relaxed, i could get it down to like 57. if i started getting a little nervous, it would jump into the low 70's

I just checked myself rite now, 62 bpm. I don't remember if lower or higher is better, but i would assume its kinda like an engine, lower rpms save gas, so lower bpm saves lives?

good news, I woke up today and checked my bpm... it was down to 73.

BuUuUuuUT.... I had a smoke and some coffee and checked it an hour later... back up to 98.

I guess I got a really bad diet contributing to most of the excess bpm... time to condition.

Oh and I have a really wide stature... used to play all the sports till I wrecked my knee. Had a resting bpm of 60 back then (4 years ago).

But I have been smoking and drinking alot more often since then... and I find my eating habits to be bad lately.

I guess I know what I have to do... I'll give an update in a month with (hopefully) some drastic changes for the better.
