People are probably just trying to save money, since everything fvcking cost more these days. Eating out and luxury items are just that...luxury items.

Extended menu is nice, but I wish more places would offer whole wheat buns as an option. I'm tired of getting an otherwise delicious sandwich with the same soak sponge bread buns I get at McDonalds. At least I can get mashed potatos substituted as places now though, I'm so damn sick of french fries. Everywhere I go they try to cram a bunch of them down my throat. They're awful for you, and most places fries don't even taste good on top of it!

If food prices are less they should cut the prices and offer less food. I can't even finish an entree at a resturant, much less a 3 course meal.

if outback served fresh local prime meats, i would go there. instead i go to lawry's, ruth's, or the local steakhouse. i would spend $40 on some prime new york or rib eye. all those chain restaurants are the exact same. same frozen shvt mass produced trucked in from aramark or vons.

As a college kid(senior year of undergrad) eating out has become more of a luxury despite the fact that I pull in ~$500-$600 a week while still going to school full time and only working one job. And whats worse is it is tempting sometimes especially since we have a 'restaurant row' right across from campus. In order it's Mongolian BBQ, La Shish, Applebees, Macaroni Grill, TGI Fridays and Jets Pizza. Then a quartermile down the road is a place called Red Bull Tavern or something like that. So a great variety of choices and all but if gas prices dont drop down to <2.50/gallon then I really cant afford to go out to eat more than once a week if that.

Especially with La Shish. Jesus the food is the amazing but the price will get you.

That said at 21 years old I've developed some decent cooking skills. Plus I've discovered you can cook nearly anything on a George Foreman grill so that helps :D

Our local restaurants are packed on Friday and Saturday nights but I guess business slacks off a lot during the week. The Lone Star steak place closed down a few months ago, but the TGI Fridays right next door seems to be doing well because they get a lot of after-work people from the surrounding office park.

Personally we have been making an effort to eat at locally owned places instead of chain restaurants. There are times the food is not a home run but that's because it's all made fresh, and some days things don't turn out perfectly. But overall, I'm happier not eating so many preserved foods even if I have to trade off a bit of consistency.

my to eat at the ruby tuesdays where I live, it's pretty much $20/person for a steak. The nicer cheap restaurants are like $20/person for a steak also. Gee wonder which one i'll go too

So you don't mind spending $15-20 on the meal, but the $2-3 tip is a dealbreaker?

La Shish is waaaaay over priced. I love Mongolian BBQ, though :D Lola claims that everything tastes the same, but then I point out that she is the one making the recipe up.

i always laugh when someone orders a steak from applebees or ruby tuesdays or such. you pay $15 for a $7 steak. but we have a good place called johny's charehouse that serves fresh steaks. but the cheapest steak is $20

heck for around $20 i can get 2 good ribeyes and they taste as good.

So many stocks to short, so little time :)

At any rate, being the cheapskate I am, I either eat at home or go out using the Entertainment Book.

Talk about shooting a gift horse in the mouth...

Our tipping system is the single best way to provide personalized service to customers.

By making the bulk of the waiter's salary dependent on customer tips, you make the customer the boss. Now the primary concern of the waiter is to please the customer, not some boss sitting in a back office.

Get rid of tipping and that money will simply be rolled into the price of your meal. It will be higher though because the employer will now have to pay matching taxes for each employee. The service will compare to fast food and non-commissioned retail.

All that because you can't be bothered with having the responsibility of paying for the service you receive yourself.

No thanks... I'll keep our present tipping system.

· Cheesecake Factory. For the price-conscious, the chain has created smaller, cheaper lunch entrees. The Shepherd's Pie typically sold for $13.95 now has a lunch portion for $10.95.

Who pays $11 for lunch?!

Subway- $3.99 for a sandwich

heck, McD -> $4 big mac meal

I'm used to $5 for lunch, including drink.

So have they said why people arent eating dinner at restaurants anymore?

All of the places mentioned in the article suck. Generally you can find better local places to replace those chains. IE: outback is terrible for steaks, I can get real steak at a great local place which also has a nice bar and pool hall, and live music on weekends :p

I stopped going to restaurants because of the ridiculous tip amounts they add to the end price, or they mask the tip price as a 'surcharge' that can't be refused...

Before you say that I am cheap, we never go to restaurants in small groups, and once racked up a 500 dollar bill that included almost $75 in tips, when all they did was hand out plates.

Screw the restaurants and their mandatory tips.

I actually like Outback steaks. I like the seasoning they use.

Without a doubt.

Biggest reason I don't eat out anymore than I do is because of the cost.

I disagree (for california). California waiters average $25-30/hour. AVERAGE. I would not mind either: 1) hiring illegals flat wage, 2) ordering through some computer system built into the table. I fvcking hate waiters.

All of thoes restaurants listed are hackjob, line-prepared, high volume factories.

Mabey the decline in their business is partly due to consumers becoming more informed about food which leads to a desire for better food? With most areas having as many local eateries as chain restaurants I believe that people are smartening up to quality dining.

I think thats part of it. I do not go to outback, applebees etc very often. there are better places at the same cost. the service is far better and not as packed with people.

Why do you hate us? I just moved to California and got a part time job waiting tables at night while I work at my sit on my ass job during the day. I just started training but I doubt ill average $25 a hour. Although getting paid $6.75 a hour is way better than the $2.13 + tips I was making in Virginia. Although it seems like all the restaurants around here require the server to tip out 33% of their tips or 5-6% of their total sales to foodrunners, bartenders, bussers, expos, which is more of a tip out than we had back in Virginia.
