Restaurant Charging Employees For Food

Aimster

Lifer
At a certain restaurant the lunch buffet ends at 2 P.M. Let's say the employee goes and grabs whatever they want from the buffet before they throw it away so he/she can eat it for lunch. They also decide to take some of it home. What is left over from the buffet is thrown away. Should the manager of the restaurant charge the employee for the food? The food at this point is not hot and is pretty much warm if not cold. One instance the employee brings their fiance over and they eat the cold leftover lunch that was saved and the manager decides to charge the employee's fiance for a cold meal. The employee argued that if they are going to charge the fiance for a buffet they should make it all fresh since the fiance was being charged for cold food. Should the friend be charged for a cold meal? What about the employee? Your thoughts. Thanks

I'd be grateful for the fiance being extended the employee discount, and not worry about the cold food. No one's forcing you to eat it, after all.

well first off the fiance is not a employee so she should be charged a full price and the employee should get charged the discounted price.

They are not in business to give away food. IT does not matter if it was going to be thrown away. they eat the food they need to pay for the food.

If it's going to be thrown away, no.

But if the manager/owner still wants to charge, then I have no objections.

$3 for a buffet is extremely cheap (the buffet food is probably cheap as well)

I think that's completely appropriate then, although I do feel that this should be communicated to the employee before hand. However, it is incumbent upon the person who is eating the meal to find out before hand whether or not they will be charged.

agreed, why should the manager let the employee bring in his entire family of 12 to eat for free every day?

well technically they can do whatever they want

that being said that manager is a dikc

It was her choice to eat the food cold. Why should Pizza Hut give your girlfriend free food? If she wanted to eat at the buffet, she should have been there before 2:00, otherwise she can eat from the menu.

At the food places I've worked at, employees were free to eat what was being thrown away, but that could easily be abused with the pizza hut buffet - you could intentionally make too much food at the end knowing that it wouldn't be eaten so you could have it. Given what we know of your character, it wouldn't surprise me if you did that and your manager recognized it and that's why he charged you.

The manager is within his legal rights and the employee was a dumbass for "assuming" he and his "squeeze" could eat for free. All restaurants have policies concerning exactly this very thing.

I think the manager was a dickweed for even bringing it up, but there may be company policy that he had to follow in order to keep the employees from just scarfing up and taking hom everything that wasn't nailed down.

Sorry, didn't read about the non-employee part. He should have only taken enough food for himself, not extra for her lunch.

The manager is in charge, not the employee.

I am the assistant manager and I am the person in charge during this time. During the lunch period the store is crowded with a good handful of people and we have one waiter. The waiter is paid $2.25 plus tips. On average he makes $10 for tips during the lunch period. Not many people tip for the buffet. His job however goes beyond the waiting the tables to washing the dishes. None of the other waiters/waitresses want to work during this time. The reason is they make 5x more money during the dinner hours and the washing of the dishes is spread to all of the waiting staff instead of just one individual.

If I had the power to go against my manager's wishes I would give the employee and his fiance the food we were going to be throwing away. I normally would not allow it, but the guy is washing dishes for a good couple of hours until it gets busy again. I know nobody else would take this job and offering him the food we would be throwing away could make up for it. Before him the job was vacant on and off for 6 months as people would quit and the manager would have to come in to take over the duties. I don't make the rules but I think my manager is wrong for bringing it up. I agree with the rules in general but I think the situation could have been handled differently considering the outcome.

I told the waiter to just share the free meal he is allowed during lunch with his fiance, but the manager found out and told me that was a no no. He said I was not being a good employee by allowing this to happen.

Thank you all for your replys. Managers make the rules and can do what they see fit for the benefit of the company and their employees. The boss has spoken so it looks like I will be washing dishes soon.

It isn't Pizza Hut, however the buffet is mainly pizza. No extra food is being made for any of the employees or their friends. Each employee is allowed a small meal free. Since the employee washes the dishes he is given the leftovers from the buffet on a rack and he goes and puts them in a box and shares them with his fiance.

Holy sh!t.... the manager sucks ass.. Retail managers are about the lowest sort of scum you can find... if a person is an UTTER failure everywhere else, at least they still have retail management to fall back on... Sure there are a couple of good people in different places but, IME they pretty much svck C0ck.

The guy is being a fvcktard and deserves to wash dishes...

The employ should get a real fvckin job.

I thought that too, but then I realized there are some good people who aren't geniuses... somebody needs to do the job and having an egocentric power-drunk manager makes it a living hell when it doesn't need to be. Seriously...

It prevents employees from wasting money by making a lot of food right before the place closes with the intent of taking it home.

The best places I've ever worked developed a family-like atmosphere... we're all in it together, let's make it as easy as possible...

Strictly enforcing the rules may be profitable, but is not comfortable... a situation of discomfort forces turnover which is not profitable. The best managers realize this and treat the employees well.

My job is to make sure the buffet is able to meet the customer's needs. 15 minutes before the end of the buffet we stop making food. Any new customers that come inside will be told that what is there is what they will get. Not much remains when the food from the buffet is thrown out. If there was a handful thrown out I would be fired. At the most there are 10 slices of various pizzas, some fries and chicken. The salad bar remains open. We also offer ice-cream in cones/cups with 8 toppings to choose from for our buffet.

I'm serious... you need to look for a new job... do you have any marketable skills? This place is going to run you into the ground with golden carrots that will never appear... They don't need you, you're utterly replaceable... start looking NOW!!!

Well, I don't agree with that. It's not how I would run things. I can understand charging employees so that they don't make 3 pounds of whatever to take home. Used to happen at McDonald's sometimes.
