When you restart your windows os, like when you need to for windows updates or a new driver installation, does it really matter if you close out all your open programs before hand ?

The only difference I notice is windows restarts a little quicker if you close out all your open programs first before clicking on restart.

No difference. I usually close open windows out of habit, but Windows will properly shut things down if you don't feel like it.

That's probably accurate. I wouldn't leave my big report that's due the next day open, and just close down Windows. Media players, browsers, and stuff that doesn't matter so much is ok though.

I believe this is the reason they tell you to close running programs.

If windows forces the programs to close you might lose data.
