I went to law school at night, and after spending some time with the government, am now in a completely different (corporate strategy) role. The market for new attorneys is pretty bad.

What I will suggest is that you do rethink your undergraduate degree options. You don't need any specific major to go to law school, so I'd suggest getting something more practical to fall back on if law school doesn't happen or you just end up with a JD that for whatever reason is not useful to you.

My undergraduate degree is in business/economics, and especially with the economics side, very helpful in getting through law school. I'd suggest business, econ, finance, or especially a hard science instead of the typical pre-law majors like english, history, poli-sci, philosophy, etc. Plus, if you get a hard science degree, you are at least patent bar eligible. That gives you a leg up.

I'd still try to talk you out of law school unless you can go for free or very cheap, though. I loved the education, I even liked being a lawyer, but paying back the loans is a bitch. I'm doing it now, but I can't pursue my ideal career path until that's all paid back. While your student loans are outstanding, you will have to work for the highest bidder.

This is my first post back from two weeks in Italy, so it could be a lot more jaded but I spent too much time in Florence to give a shit right now :)

I was 35 and it worked out wonderfully. Of course, by starting over I went into a field I had no experience in and certainly no education in. Yet, I persevered. Now ~10 years later my household income has gone from $30K to about $140K, and the wife and I are realizing that even in a post academic apocalypse one can change for the good.

Otherwise what else do you have as an option?

Can't possibly be worse than where I am. 29 living at home with parents, never had a GF, working retail jobs, etc.. I'm going back to school but I'm going to be behind you. I know of people who go back even later than this though and turn out well.

Any interest in nursing? The schooling is short and relatively simple. Good job market if yo'ure willing to relocate, lots of room for growth (can get NP license for 90-110k/yr salary or CRNA for 150k+/yr) and you get to meet a lot of women, which gives you an opportunity to find a GF.

I'm 28, 4 year Army vet, only have my AS so far, and am completely floundering. I'm making about 1.5-2x what I was making in the military as a bartender/server but that wont last forever and doesn't bring much satisfaction.

Am I out of hope? Definitely not. I just need to start a career in the next few years, I just don't know what yet.

I'll be 28 next year and I'm getting desperate enough to consider the military. Gotta get in before the age cutoffs start.

Based on DanTMWTMP's post on page 1 ... it kinda sounds like you just need to be his friend and drink from the same faucet or something and *poof* you'll be a lawyer!!!

:) ...

First rule ... don't compare yourself to others. Sometimes you can use others as a benchmark ... but that doesn't mean jack in the big picture.

Nah nursing doesn't interest me at all. Also like Slew said I'm in Canada.

My interests are Math, the Sciences and Comp Sci.

Why dont you look into what alkemyst suggested.

What kind of science do you like? There's always pharmacy school as well, which is relatively easy to get into as well

Don't know what your relatively is based on, but pharmacy school is pretty hard to get into at any major college.

This is my situation for those that don't know.

I'm 28 right now, and will be getting out of the Marine Corps in a year.

As far as past experience go, aside from five years in the military, I have an associates degree and random work in the service industry.

My first priority after getting out is to finish a Bachelors. I have always dreamed of going to law school.

What are my chances of making a successful career this late? What are my chances of getting into a law school? With a family now, will I be able to succeed in this goal?

Even if I have basically no interruption from getting out to starting school and assuming seamless transfer to law school, I won't be starting a career until I'm 35. This is more than ten years after "traditional" students.

The closer it gets, the more worried I become...

If you are planning on going to law school, I highly recommend you familiarize yourself with the main bases for admission (this is your undergraduate GPA -- essentially all college-level courses you've taken prior to your first Bachelors degree are counted) and your LSAT score. Your military experience will be a positive as well.

However, the legal market is very saturated. There are an astonishing number of grads who go to law school, come out 100k+ in debt, and do not have work. It's so prevalent now that it's caught the attention of congress.

The general wisdom now is that the only schools that are a good bet are those you go to for free (on scholarship) or those that are in the top ~20, give or take.

You should find out now whether this is a good option for you given your current GPA and future plans...

My interests span the gamut. Astronomy, Biology (Entomology, Virology, Mycology, and others), Physics, Math and more. But if I had to chose one area to focus on it would probably be physics. Specifically particle physics and cosmology. This and as I said Math. And of course Comp Sci.

Come to think of it I like many field in the arts as well.

I guess I dont know your education level. Have you actually studied particle physics and liked the material (and have had an aptitude for it?).

Well I have to discount all the times that depression and anxiety have fucked up my education (I must have dropped out 4 or 5 times from university).

As far as university level courses directly dealing with physics go I've only taken the equivalent of a 2nd level physics course. Newtonian mechanics, optics, electromagnetism, etc. As far as aptitude goes though that's a lot more to do with math where I have more experience. I finished Calculus up to a 300 level calc course. I've also taken linear algebra and discrete math courses. I do NOT pretend that these are high level courses by any means. However I've always done well in these course (in high school I got mostly A+s in science courses and mostly As in these university courses as well). I read up quite a bit on popular science writings on particle physics and cosmology and while I can't delve into the math at this level I understand most of it quite well and have a good memory for almost everything I read in the sciences.

I wasn't too far off from you. I started Law School at 28. If you don't have any kids, it's not too hard. I just talked to a friend today who wants a change and start law school at 35.

You can do it.
