in win98 when you select the reboot option in shutdown while holding down shift it would just restart win98 without rebooting the entire pc. is this possible in w2k????

Don't think so. It's really most annoying if you are installing some drivers that require a restart however. Win2K like NT takes ages to load, but then you won't ahve to reboot nearly as often, so it balances out.

Win98's faster shutdown is a restart of the 32-bit kernal without having to restart the 16-bit DOS kernal sitting underneath.

Since Win2K is fully 32-bit and not sitting on top of DOS, there is no 32-bit portion to restart, and no 16-bit portion to keep in memory. That's why you cannot do a fast restart of Win2K. The closest thing that you can do is log off, and then log back on.

If after some application you were asked to restart your machine and you try to sneak away from it by just logging off and back on again, that probably won't do the trick..nice try though...:)

Sometimes if you ignore those messages for restarting(like I usually do), it ends up leaving the machine in a very useless state that only a full re-start will fix..Regards
