Restart loop in XP after latest MS update.

I'm running Windows XP Pro with service pack 3. After installing the latest MS updates, my PC went into a continuous restart loop. Here's what happened:

I installed the latest Microsoft Updates (there were 4 updates) this morning, 9/9/09, and then did the requested restart.

- My PC booted up to my hardware profile selection screen then continued the restart as normal.
- Immediately another restart was initiated.
- The restart then paused at a DOS screen similar to the one when F8 is tapped to boot into safe mode.
- I pressed ENTER to continue to boot normally but another restart was initiated.
- This became a loop.
- On the next DOS screen, I selected "boot with the last good configuration" (paraphrasing) and then WinXP finally booted up.

Anyone else have this problem after installing the latest MS updates?

I haven't seen this happen yet. Rolled out the latest update to a couple dozen machines running SP3 this morning. At least a few have been restarted.

Thanks for taking the time to let me know. Very much appreciated! I called a friend and he said he didn't have any problems this morning. He has his XP set up to do automatic updates so we assume his PC was updated already.

I know it's a long shot, but by chance did any of the PCs that you updated have a 2nd hardware profile set up which brings up the hardware profile selection screen on boot up? My problem may be related to my having two hardware profiles.

Thanks,
Sky

I'm not aware of it if they do. Dell dimensions, optiplex, and vostro office machines with the oem windows install.

Thanks for the follow up. I'll do a more intensive web search if no one else here had problems.

For the future, uncheck the "Automatic Restart" option in System Failure on the advanced tab of System Properties. This way you should see the BSOD error (if that is it) instead of the system looping. Should help with ID'ng the offending update/driver/hardware.

Just did what you suggested. Will see what happens. Thanks for helping out!

UPDATE TO MY PROBLEM:

After unchecking the auto restart per Reggie's suggestion, I tried to do another MS Update. A Java script update was installed and a restart recommended. So I did the restart and no problems occurred.

I checked my update history on the MS website and it showed the update that I did today and the 4 updates that I downloaded and installed yesterday. Apparently the option to restart with the last known good configuration when I had the problem still kept the 4 updates that I did yesterday (I hope). Just for the record should anyone else have problems, the latest 5 updates were:

Windows XP Security Update for Jscript 5.8 for Windows XP (KB971961) Thursday, September 10, 2009 Microsoft Update
Windows XP Security Update for Windows Media Format Runtime 9, 9.5 & 11 for Windows XP SP 3 (KB968816) Wednesday, September 09, 2009 Microsoft Update
Windows XP Security Update for Jscript 5.8 for Windows XP (KB971961) Wednesday, September 09, 2009 Microsoft Update
Windows XP Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - September 2009 (KB890830) Wednesday, September 09, 2009 Microsoft Update
Windows XP Security Update for Windows XP (KB956844) Wednesday, September 09, 2009 Microsoft Update

It's OK to mark this thread as resolved.
Thanks all,
