Responsiveness

One thing that continues to confound me is why on a lesser computer, say a Dell 2350, do the flyout menus expand at light speed upon mousing over them in the programs listing, when on a workstation class machine with several times the power menus fly out listlessly and in their own good time (comparatively). It's just fly out menus in the program list I'm discussing here, programs scale appropriately. The responsiveness of the cheapo mocks me for having spent so much on my rig. Is there a setting to look for? To some this may seem petty, but likely not to most in this forum. Ideas?

Are you talking about when you hit the START button?
If so,
then rightclick the desktop, properties, appearance, effects, untick fade effect.
Is this what you mean? If not then please explain further.

When using the start menu the you will notice a delay between different tiers of the menu hierarchy. For the fastest computer experience possible I recommend changing this value to zero. This will allow the different tiers to appear instantly.

1. Start Regedit. If you are unfamiliar with regedit please refer to our FAQ on how to get started.
2. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop
3. Select MenuShowDelay from the list on the right.
4. Right on it and select Modify.
5. Change the value to something lower (note: a setting of zero (0) is virtually instantaneous - experiment with other settings (200 or 300 or 400 perhaps) to see what you are most comfortable with..
6. Reboot your computer.

This is what he's looking for, it makes your system seem faster as the menus on the program list expand super fast.

Have fun! 🙂

Powerful knowledge base here at Anandtech! Yes, that's got it. Every little tweak counts! Thanks for all the help. side note: The computers in question showed values of 400 (mine) and 0 (dell). To me these interface tweaks make for a much improved experience. Thanks again.
