Response From ABIT Tech Support about KT7 Raid

I sent an email to ABIT technical support asking them what should be connected to the following IDE connectors on the KT7 Raid motherboard. The IDE connectors are Ultra ATA 100/Raid Primary connector, Ultra ATA 100/Raid Secondary Connector, Primary IDE connector, and Secondary IDE connector. I told them I would be using a Western Digital Hard Drive 40gig, A pioneer 16xDVD/40xcdrom, an Iomega 250 Zip Drive and a Ricoh 7040A cdrw. Here is there response. They told me that the Raid connectors (IDE PORT 3/4 )should only connect the ATA 66/100 HD devices. I don't know what they mean by this. What out of my cdrw, hard drive, zip, and dvd/cdrom are considered HD devices? Then they told me the rest should be connected to the regular IDE channels (IDE port 1/2). I am not sure what 2 devices get connected to IDE port 3/4 and what 2 devices get connected to IDE port 1/2. Can anybody simplify this for me? Thanks

Sir.... put down the screw driver and step away from the PC.....

I thought the dead give away was the ATA66/100 part of the email since CDROMs, CDRWs, Zips and LS120s are not > UDMA. You may not have already known that.

But to simplify their response even more:

HD is short for "HARD DRIVE" (some use HDD, which is HARD DISK DRIVE). Only plug HARD DRIVES to the ATA100 controller (IDE3 and 4). For you that would include the Western Digital and the Western Digital. Don't forget the Western Digital.

Here is why I am a little confused. I will only be using 1 hard drive with this board to start. I know the Western Digital Hard drive should be connected to the ATA 66/100 Raid Primary connector. I wasn't sure what device should go into the ATA 66/100 Raid secondary connector. Or if one should even be put there. I guess i should stick to coronary bypass surgery and forget these computers. Fixing hearts is my specialty.

😛 😛 😛 😛 😛 😛

If you only put hard drives on the ATA100 controller and you only have one hard drive, then you would not put anything on the secondary ATA100 (IDE4).

Put everything else on IDE1 and 2.

Well with your help it looks like I am going to do the following. I will put my hard drive on the Ultra ATA 100/Raid Primary connector. The Ultra ATA 100/Raid Secondary connector will remain open for a future additional hard drive. The Primary and Secondary IDE connectors will handle the cdrw, zip drive and dvd/cdrom. What would be the 2 best devices to link together out of these 3 since I only have 2 IDE connectors to use? Let me know. Thanks!

In most cases you would make your CD's (DVD and CDRW) the master on your IDE1 and IDE2, one master per cable. That would make your zip a slave to the CD of your choice. This is setup by jumpers on your CD's and zip.

With the CDRW and the DVD on different controllers you have the chance of doing a 'direct' burn. If they are connected to the same controller, direct burns are almost impossible.
