Respectable score for golf n00b? Also, what do you pay for 18 holes?

Sunday I played my first 18 holes of golf ever. And being the remarkably bright and intelligent person I am, I choose to do it on the single hottest day of the year thus far :)

Anywhoo...I played on a public golf course that was called "deceptively hard" by the old guy who starts you. I had a 59(on a par 35) on the first nine, and an awe inspiring 64 on the back 9 :) I had like 10 drops because of water hazards and balls lost in the woods, so that wasn't helping. My pitching from 15 yards away from the green needs some serious improvement as well.

How much does the average golf newbie improve, and what is considered "respectable"? I'm just curious how much I suck right now, and how much I need to improve to be not so sucky.

Also - I paid $16 for 18 holes, and carts were $24(!!!). There's 4 public courses here in town, all of which are about that price. What does it cost you to golf in your area?

my company has a golf league. One of the women in my dept. is in it. Her last game she shot a 78 over front 9 and 90 over the back 9. :)

that's not too bad.... I was going to say around 120

I've been playing for about two years, and I'm still horrible  I average ~100-105

I paid $16 for 18 holes, and carts were $24(!!! ).

carts were an additional $24, making it $40 to play?

at the two public courses i play, i usually pay $20-$30 including cart.

Wow...and she's in a league? :Q

I'm sure I could play better if the heat index hadn't been 120. Actual recorded temp was 103. Eesh! Scary part was that there were like 5 eediots out there playing in full length blue jeans. WTF???

Hehehe..nothing like making it to the green on a par 5 in three strokes, and then taking 5 more to put the damn ball into the little hole!

Arg!!!!

That's not a bad score for someone who doesn't play. Just keep playing and you'll get better. :)

I like to play 9-hole par 3 courses. No woods necessary. :p

If that was your first time ever, without lessons or anything, that is a very good score. Normal greens fees are like 20 bucks, and 10 bucks per person in a cart. If you have friends or family that play golf it may be worth it to you to get a golf membership at a country club or something, the way it is set up where I am, you pay 100 bucks a month, greens fees are free, you get unlimited golf, a bag of balls is like $2, you still have to pay for a cart, but it is reduced price (like 5 bucks per person) So if you get life 4 people together (they usually have some sort of family membership, or a business membership) and you each play once a month, you have it paid for already.

Those scores sound about right for a n00b on 9. A couple years back when I first started, I was shooting mid-high 50's for 9. None of my game was really consistent though, so I could never count on my driver/iron/wedge/putter when I needed it, and that's not good because I'm the type of person who expects myself to go out there and just do good right away, so I get frustrated pretty easily.

Maybe that's why I haven't been on a course in 2~ years :Q

My first 9-hole round this year I shot a 53. I parred 3 holes out of the 9, but got a 7 a couple of the holes (one of the par-3's. :|)

I've been playing for 10+ years. ;) (Maybe only a dozen times a year at most).

Going tomorrow morning. w00t!

I dunno what my score was. Probably like 125 or something. We actually only played 15 holes, and I was only par on 2 holes. It was like 100 degrees.

We paid $12 to play on a 9 hole course, but they let you go through twice. Pull cart was an add'l $2.
Who uses electric carts? Get some exercise, tubby!

Usually public courses are like $20.

Private courses? sky's the limit.

Thats good, I would say I'm an average putter, I am really good at chipping though (any time I don't put a chip inside 3 feet I have made a mistake) My problem is, I might hit a great drive, straight and long, but my second or third shot I just won't think about and I'll top it or something, it only really happens when I don't play often, normally I keep it in the low 80's, high 70's, but if I go more than a month without swinging a club, I'll be up in the high 90's.

120 is respectable. Started out like that too. Took a while to break 100 then I broke 100 and then 90 within a month. I'm stuck at around 90-95 now.

I envy you and your $16 rounds. I live in the NYC area and you can imagine how much it costs to play around here.

'nuther question - are you "less of a man" if you use some of the farther up tee boxes? When I played, I used the farthest ones back. Would it be alright for a beginner to to a closer tee off? On some of the holes, the difference between the furthest back, and the next furthest back was about 50 yards. On this course, there were 4 different tee off positions.

I play from the White tees (so-called "Men's").

Just don't be a girly-man and play from the Red Tees (so-called "Women's") ;)

We only have a private course around here, the "Governor's Club." It costs 30K a year to join and if one of the those members wants to bring a guest it's an extra $75. So I normally hop the fence at night and go for a couple holes of night golf. The first time I played that entire course I shot a 116. That was 2 years ago. Now I've managed to bring it down to a respectable 93 ;)
