I know web programming but I'm really bad at the creative side of website programming: I just can't design good looking websites. I've turned down several jobs due to lack of artistic skill. Most of my programming projects require little or no artistic creativity, but I feel like I'm missing a good portion of income by not designing websites due to lack of artistic creativity.. any tips on overcoming this problem?

One strategy would be to find a partner or subcontractor who knows PhotoShop, Illustrator, and the creative side of HTML / CSS.

I've gone through the same problem. In fact, I've completely given up web programming because I am not creative and can't make professional websites, anymore.

IMHO, You have it or you don't. It takes serious ability to make professional looking website, both in graphic design and CSS/HTML/etc. It's not something you can "overcome".

Now, if you are talking about using bits and pieces from here and there and altering templates, thats different. But to make an entire site from scratch, thats difficult.

Sorry if this isn't much help...just thought i'd share my thoughts.

If you want to get good with web GUI design framework, take a CSS class. There are tons of best practice approaches depending on the type of website you are making that can give a good start.

Eventually you start building up a codebase of CSS you often use, much like a library of DLLs.

As to the artwork, license a place that has a repository of stuff you are looking for. Unless you really want to heavily invest, there is no need to learn and buy photoshop or illustrator.

If you want custom stuff, PM me. I've got a whole bunch of contacts who are experts at photoshop and illustrator on the cheap, people who I've personally worked with.
