Resonance of Fate

Anyone else get?

I was really looking to FF but the reviews and impressions convinced me that I won't get my money's worth until a big price drop.

I bought this instead after hearing it was better.

The combat system best described as a mix between Valkyria Chronicles and an entirely new creative system.

I'm splitting time with GOW3 so I only played a little bit but it is complicated and definitely not for everyone. I am enjoying it a lot though and can't wait to spend more time with it.

Is that the one with guns? I lost interest when I saw that all the non-battle environments are scrolling 2D. Seems like that would limit exploration, which is my favorite part of RPGs.

It is actually a mix but yeah there is a hex based grid for the overworld but some, I don't know how much yet, of the hexes are explorable in 3d. When you go on the hex it changes to a typical view and you can run around and explore, go to the guild hall, do missions, etc.

Gamefly'd it, simply couldn't get into it.. sent it back and went back to finishing up FF13 post-game content.

Gonna rent it first. Tri-Ace last two releases (SO:4 and IU) had me running for the hills. Boy do I still regret those two purchases.

Yeah so4 is bad so I don't blame you and I do think this one is so different you should rent first. I'm still really liking it though

Eh? There haven't even been that many reviews for this game. I've only found about 2-3, but they've all been positive so far.

Maybe by some of the less popular or less critical sites.

1up is the only site I actually read the reviews of, and they didn't care for the game. IGN didn't give it a good review either. According to MC, 1up gave the game a 58 while IGN gave it a 70. The average is 75, which is being pulled up by a bunch of fluff 80s from sites like 3DJuegos, Cheat Code Central, and PSM3.

Even a 75 is really low for a professional review score.

That the same score as Star Ocean 4, which we all know isn't a very stellar game...

How can you say they are fluffed up if you haven't played it. It is unique and very different. Of course some people aren't going to like it but the review texts are pretty good even if the overall scores aren't excellent. It is about 50,000 times better than SO4 that is for sure. Also, 74 isn't bad for a jrpg this gen and I think this game, visuals aside is much better than FFXIII.

Here are some of the comments. I don't see any that turn me off...yes it is a HARDCORE rpg, yes it is difficult, yes it has a steep learning curve. It certainly isn't for everyone but for those bored by the simplicity of many recent rpgs, yeah it is great. Even the middling reviews sound decent when you read the text. Main complaint is difficulty and learning curve.

"Fun and engaging, Resonance of Fate is a unique experience. So many things to be done, with a lot of side quests, a deep combat system and charming characters. Possibly, the most original JRPG in years, but it's too complex and frustrating. Only for hardcore JRPG gamers."

"Resonance of Fate is for the hardcore JRPG fan. It can be difficult and confusing, and requires a lot of grinding and heavy lifting to make it through to the close."

"Resonance of Fate breathes new life into the stagnating JRPG genre with a unique battle system that unites real-time and turn-based combat. Visually the game might not excel and the steep learning curve may mean it's not for everyone, but the strong, strategic gameplay more than make up for these little downsides"

"Featuring a deep combat system and a huge load of interesting ideas, Resonance of Fate is one of the more interesting JRPG of these last months."

"Sure, if you can grind through numerous random battles without losing your patience, the experience can be rewarding when you finally succeed. But for the rest of you, I'd recommend something else if you're not ready to devote some serious study time to the hardcore, incredibly unforgiving trek through this steampunk city."

"A hugely interesting game, as fascinating as it is frequently frustrating, as engaging as it is eccentric and, for those who are hooked by its quirky charms, it will provide one of the most inspired approaches to the JRPG seen in a decade."

There is a huge difference between engaging 'hardcore' (Demon's Souls) and inappropriately hardcore. This sounds like the latter, where the difficulty is more of a hindrance than an appealing factor. Hence the similar comments to DS, but a much lower score.

(Also, I hate required grinding in any RPG)

The people reviewing don't understand I think . I didn't have to grind. I think they are needing to grind because their strategy is bad. I think people are just lazy if they are complaining about that. Yeah it has some new concepts that haven't been used which are a little confusing until u try them but there are huge optional tutorials that explain everything perfectly fine unless you are a dunce.

Keep in mind, I am defending it but I'm not saying it is for you or that anyone specifically will like it. If you prefer to select fight for 8 hours straight like in FFXIII then this isn't for you...I kid!

Frankly, I have just been unimpressed by JRPGs (excluding Demon's Souls) as of late. Lost Odyssey, Eternal Sonata, Blue Dragon, Last Remnant, SO4, etc...I haven't really enjoyed a JRPG in a while. The last time was Ar Tonelico 2 (a niche title that is pretty panned by reviewers).

I've enjoyed Tri-Ace titles in the past (Radiata Stories is one of my favorite JRPGs), so I keep having high hopes for their titles. Bad reviews just make my hopes feel unanswered.

Maybe I'll pick up the game when it gets cheaper, if it is as good as you say.

Honestly it is different enough that I'd suggest trying to borrow or rent it. You may hate it.

As much as I like it, I got SMT Strange Journey yesterday and played for 3.5 hours and I think that is the best RPG I've played this gen unless you include P4. So not sure how much I'll play it until I finish Strange Journey
