As I look to resolve Event Log errors and warnings, I've encountered the "Gatherer" warning for Windows Search (and Indexing). I've looked through available solutions to this problem to discover it requires either tweaking the choice of objects for indexing or simply turning off the indexing feature.

My system does HTPC duty, feeding Media Center LiveTV or recordings to my AVR/HDTV. I had archived some recordings to my server.

Media Center is listed as an object to be indexed under "Indexing Options." If I need indexing, it is for MS OUtlook and files on my boot-system disk. I don't see why I need to index "Media Center."

So the question is -- "Do I?" and "WHY?"

I'll add my "update" to this.

Sometimes the Indexer can become misconfigured to index things you don't want it to, things which it can't access. The problem can be resolved by pointing to "C:\" or "Outlook" or other items you want indexed.

But some say "turn off Indexing!!"

I thought that was stupid advice . . . Until I replaced my HDD with a Sammy 840 Pro. Configuring the Sammy at least one way automatically shuts off indexing.

End of story.
