I've built many computers over the years, but this is really stumping me. Hopefully someone here can help me think of a way to troubleshoot.

I built a new rig for my father, tested it thoroughly (memtest for 12 hours, and then Prime for another 8) then shipped it to him. It's not OC'd - I just wanted to be sure that everything was working properly before I sent it off.

After he received, I had him move the cables one by one to the new tower from the old one. He then turned it on. It booted normally into Vista, then just lost power 5 minutes later. I had him check that the power cord was correctly seated, then tried again. Windows booted again, then completely lost power again. Both times, nothing was being done on the computer itself.

My thoughts:
*Somehow the PSU went bad (unlikely i think)
*Some connection is loose somewhere (possible, but could this cause such a result)
*Bad mobo (no idea)
*The (stock) CPU cooler somehow shifted during transport (unlikely as it's one of those stock intel ones and pretty firmly seated)
*Something in vista (i set up the system, and played with it for a few hours but am pretty unfamiliar with Vista)
*Some weird hardware/driver conflict - he has a different monitor, printer, keyboard, mouse and speakers than those i used when i configured and tested (no idea really)

My father isn't very technical so I'd really not like him to open the case. Things could go from bad to worse quickly as I lose track of what he's doing inside the case as he describes them to me remotely.

So I'm putting this forth to everyone here in the hope that someone will catch something I missed. Thanks!

The components:
Thermaltake CASE VF6000BWS
GSkill 2x1Gig PC6400 RAM
FOXCONN M7VMX-K GF7050/610I 775 Mobo
ROSEWILL Card reader
CPU INTEL E2180 2.0G
Seagate HD 80G | SATA2
ANTEC PSU 380W | EA380
MS WIN VISTA HM PREM SP1 32BIT
LITE-ON DVD DRIVE | PATA

If it consisently loses power after 5min, I'd say the CPU is overheating and shutting down. If it is more random I'd say something is wrong with the PS.

First step would be to get him to monitor the CPU temp in the BIOS.

I agree with the previous poster. Add to the fact that YOU stress tested it fine tells me nothing is actually "broken" so the most likely result is:

*The (stock) CPU cooler somehow shifted during transport (unlikely as it's one of those stock intel ones and pretty firmly seated)

RESOLVED - it was in fact the CPU cooler. Reseating it was easy enough to talk him through. Cheers.
