Which would be a more pleasing visual experience... 1280x1024 res at high fps or 1600x1200 res with less fps? Probably a 7900gt playing first person shooters and nfs games. Is there a noticable difference?

Yeah... according to the vga roundup @ tomshardware, the 7900gt gets over 40 fps in every game @ 1600x1200.

Depends on your preferences, the game and the actual framerates. Although I would go for the former in most modern games.

If you have an LCD and it's native resolution is 1600x1200 games will look like crap at a different resolution.
