Put my old 480 in my son's computer with an ASUS motherboard and AMD 6300 chip (both new and upgrades from his previous board and cpu). with both configurations, resolution periodically switches and will stick to 1280x1020.

Trying to reset it through Windows 7 or NVidia Control Panel does not help, as it jumps back to the 1280x1024 setting. We were using a DVI hookup and now and HDMI hookup to a widescreen monitor. We prefer to run at 1920x1080, which is what I was running with this card when it was in my computer (oh, and the monitor he is now using is my old one I was running with this card).

Issue happens after games and sometimes at bootup. I've checked running processes and programs to make sure nothing is running that may be causing it, and can't seem to find anything. Ran CCleaner, Malwarebytes and Ad-aware and nothing is coming up.

Sometimes, a reboot will correct and put the resolution back to 1920x1080. Once we get there, it will stay for a good period of time, but eventually it jumps back down to the lower resolution.

I'm starting to think the card is going bad, but wondering if someone else has some ideas to look into.

Did you start with a fresh install of windows or an aging install? Did you overwrite other drivers? Etc.

No fresh install of Windows - issue was happening before the new motherboard and cpu. I did fresh install newest NVidia drivers.
