juz wanna have an idea what are the resolutions u guys have setup for yr 19 inch monitors...
never manage to afford a 19 inch monitors till recently..so pls state yr comments..
What refresh rate is recommended..is 75 hz enuff? or u really need 85hz..can u tell teh diff btw 75 and 85hz from yr naked eyes
thanx

I can't tell the difference between 85 and 75 Hz, but when I use the computer for long periods of time, I tend to get dizzy with the lower refresh rate so I always go for at least 85 HZ.

Also, I run the desktop at 1280x960@85Hz but for games, I usually bring it down to 1024x768 or 800x600 due to my vid card.

the general opinion seems to be that 75hz is the minimum comfortable refresh rate. some people say they can tell the difference between 75hz and 85hz, some can't. therefore, it varies somewhat from person to person...it's up to you whether 75hz is fine or if you need higher. it seems that over 85hz doesn't make a difference, but a lot of people just set the refresh to the highest the monitor supports at their desired resolution. as for gaming, the resolution is highly video card dependant. you can have a 1.4ghz t-bird and an amazing 19" monitor...pair that with a tnt2 m64 and you'll be lucky to happily game at 800x600. at this point, i would guess that a majority of users here have at least a geforce2 gts or better, and with that 1024x768 is easily used for gaming. with my "big bastard" rig i usually use 1152x864 for both desktop and gaming

My desktop is 1152 x 864 x 32 @100Hz. I game at 1024 x 768 x 32 though, because I like high FPS (doesn't everyone?) and my GF2GTS kind of struggles with the FPS at 1152x864. I find that in UT, I gain about 15FPS going frome 1152 to 1064. To me, there's a big diff b/t 60fps and 45fps.

I like 1152 better though....someday.

Ish man!! Why do you want a 5:4 ratio on your desktop?

Run 1280X960, keep it 4:3.

I had a 19" viewsonic flatscreen 1024X768 looks great, and I don't like to run any higher because it does not look any better in my opinion. At least not with the current games on the market.

85Hz at desired resolution should be fine. I run 1024X768 @ 100Hz

hope this helps!

Uh oh...here we go w/the "why are U running an improper ratio" thing again! :Q
It's your computer, and whatever ratio you wanna run it at is fine by me. Personally, I stick with the proper 4:3 ratio, but huzza and hurrah for everyone who does what they want to with their stuff! 4:3 5:3 9:2 Whatever looks good to you! 'Nuff said. 🙂

I can't even tell the difference between 60hz and 75hz. Some monitors I can, but most I don't see a difference. I can tell on a 19" dell (Trinitron), but not on my proview at home. go figure.

My desktop is 16x12
Gaming is 10x7

When you can game at 16x12 at higher than 60fps, I'm in! Until then, its 10x7.

Question: how does the refresh rate get determined when you set the resolution using the in-game menu? I don't recall any games offering refresh rate options. Does it use the "Adapter Default" or will it use the last refresh rate you set when at that resolution using the Monitors control panel? Or does it different from game to game?

The refresh rate that is chosen in games, is the one you set for your windows desktop.

If you put adapter to "default" all resolutions will run at 60Hz.

If you choose each and every resolution on your desktop and set each of them individually it will remember them for each resolution.

If you choose "optimal" all will run that the fastest the monitor and video synchronized can handle for each resolution. Turning Vsync off has nothing to do with refresh rate either, I thought I would state that before I get a post about it. Turning off Vsync simply lets the frame rates in games or movies surpass the monitors feilds per second. Often times with Vsync off and a fast video card you will get "tearing" and lot of it. Keep Vsync on unless you are running benchmarks!

Hope this answers your question!

That answered it, thanks. I figured that was the case, but I never thought about it much. I just happened to notice the other day that the refresh rate seemed to be low in a game after it changed the resolution and it set me to thinking. It's normally not a problem since I play at resolutions that I have used my desktop at.
